Helpful tips on Quarentining your new additions

I am only talking about VISIBLE PESTS! Why is it that much to ask for people that are selling frags to inspect for VISIBLE PESTS? The board members should be doing something to address this, as they are overseeing the frag auction, and taking a percentage of the sales for club use.

I truly believe the QT is the best possible solution to even the most experienced aquarist, however I also agree that some changes need to be made see the new post on monthly frag auction and suggest ideas rather than bashing people and stating who should have done what, remember folks this is strictly a volunteer operation.

I agree. There should be some kind of action taken if members are continually complaining about corals brought from a particular member. Lying and decieving or not telling the whoe truth about the frag is not right.
From other posts that I have read about the last auction, it sounds like Matt is trying to make necessary changes.
He said
"However, if I receive multiple complaints regarding the same person(s) who has brought said frags, the ORCA Board will take action against the offending member. This practice will not be tolerated. This club relies on the frag auction as a huge source of enjoyment and entertainment for its members. Lying and misleading club members will not be tolerated."

Again quoting Matt..."It's "your" fellow hobbyists and peers that bring these frags to auction and there are those who have no conscience regarding spreading their problems to fellow hobbyists."

I do believe that Matt is trying to do the right thing for the club and its members. Give him some time to make this right. He can't fix it overnight.
One other thought...the board does an a lot of work to make the meetings happen and to make them fun for all the members. They aren't miracle workers. I think we need to give them credit for everything that they are doing to make this club the best that it can be. Compared to some clubs, I think they are doing pretty darn good. The board is working for all its members, give them a chance to try to fix this.

I have a question which will bring the thread back to the topic at hand; with the hand on the back bio filters, what do you do with the bio wheel after a Quarantine period? You you clean it in bleach or chlorine? Wash it and then place it back in your sump for a gathering of more biological matter?

If whatever animal is safe and clean enough to be moved from the quarantine to the display, then so is the biowheel or whatever biological filter you are using. No need for the bleach.

Well a spin on this question, what if the fish was sick, is there anyway to sanitize the biowheel for use in a future QT application?

Just asking sine we have the pro here helping us out.

BTW, If you would ever like to come to Florida and be a guest speaker at one of our meetings, it would be great :P

It depends on the sickness and what happens. If a fish gets sick and dies, I would bleach everything. If on the other hand, a fish gets ich and you successfully treat it with copper or hyposalinity, there should be no reason to sterilize the biological filter as the treatment would have cleaned the filter as well as the fish.

I would be happy to come and speak, although I am pretty booked up right now.

Hi Steven, How about taking a look at your calender for the 3rd or 4th quarter and seeing if you might be able to squeeze a trip down to Florida. We meet on the last Saturday of every month.

We would certainly have to discuss the particulars in greater detail, but if your interested we would love to have you.

If this sounds good, please email me at president@o-r-c-a.com with your honorarium requirements etc.

Thanks,

Matt Kantz
