Herbie without overflow

I'm in the process of drilling a new tank, its going to be set up without an internal overflow, the bottom of the tank cant be drilled because it is tempered. How would I go about setting up the drains? Thanks.

Drill out the back, and do it right. Corner overflows, and bottom drilled tanks are absolete. Better overflow designs, and siphon drains systems, have made the 'reef ready tank' something not to be desired.

Without an overflow, you get no surface skimming, no surface renewal; gas exchange and 'protein' skimming suffer. These are very important aspects of the marine aquarium system. Don't set up any drain system without an overflow. (The open end of a pipe, or upturned elbow is not an overflow by any definition.)

The C2C overflow, doesn't go to the bottom of the tank, so there is no need to be drilling the bottom. If drilling 2 holes out the back for a 2-pipe siphon system (herbie's modifictaion is a waste for anything other than a corner overflow,) drill three holes and use Bean's system. Why settle for so so...

Srry for the late response. Yes I understand it would be best to run an overflow for surface skimming and run a beananimal, but im a student so I'm trying to do every thing as budget friendly and affectively as possible. I'm not saying an overflow is a huge expense its just that i would rather not spend 50 bucks on a peice of plastic. Plus I've ran tanks all hob in the past and haven't seen any negative effects from low/no surface skimming. My real concern is how to run a safe and quite drain system without the use of an overflow. Thanks.

Put very simply: it cannot be done...without an overflow...

Expanding just a little bit, and adding to what RE said (which is very true, despite the grin ;) ) if someone is not willing, or able, to put the safety and well being of the animals in their system first, then they are in the wrong hobby. Especially when talking the basic necessities for a system, not $1000 skimmers, and $600 pumps. :)

This is one of the most expensive 'home' hobbies there are, and it is also the most scientifically complex 'home' hobby due to its interdisciplinary nature.

WE have a responsibility; that is what this hobby is about, not our budget, though everyone has a concern for economics. The animals welfare is what overflows, surface skimming/surface renewal, and gas exchange are all about. You may not have 'seen' any negative effects, that does not mean they were/are not present, rather they were/are mis-interpreted and attributed to something totally unrealated. The fish can't knock on the glass and start shouting...
