here I go again

Well, over a year ago one of my 250 DD DT's was hit with Ich. I netted out all my fish, and left the tank fallow for 11 weeks. I treated the fish with hypo, and didn't lose a single fish.

I had a very nice Passer in QT, and was about to put him into the tank, when I noticed spots on my PBT, and a few more on several of my other large angels. I spent yesterday afternoon netting everyone out (involved removing all the rocks, what a PITA).

So, this is the second time this tank has been hit. I have a QT running 24/7/365, and haven't added a fish or coral to this tank until they were in QT for at least 8 weeks. I always treated my fish in QT with hypo, but now I am going to treat with cupramine going forward.

I have the smaller fish now in my 40G breeder QT, and am treating them with cupramine.

My problem is my large angels and tangs. I have a 9" Emperor angel, an 8" Sailfin tang, a 5" blue ring angel, a large Tusk, and the aforementioned PBT. They are being housed in a brute trashcan with a heater and a large canister filter, also being treated with cupramine.

Will the fish in the brute be OK through the cupramine treatment? Once they have been treated, I can move them to one of my 40G breeders on my frag system (I have three).

My LFS's claim the PBT can be suspect, and still have Ich after extended hypo and cupramine treatments. My PBT may end up in a very extended cupramine treatment or relegated to another tank.

Your going to have your hands full keeping up with ammonia in a brute can with that many sizeable fish. I don't envy you. I might suggest tank transfer method instead though & change water/buckets every other day (since I doubt you could push 3 days out). That would still leave question of where to put the fish after treatment & before your fallow period ends. Your not going to have an easy time no matter what.

Get another brute trash can, heater and Amquel or prime to neutralize any ammonia and do the Tank Transfer Method. I would not suggest treating with cupramine in the trash can, the fish aren't easily viewable and it's hard to see if they are eating.

Your best chance is in a two stage approach.

You treat the fish enough to prevent them from dying and return them to the ich infested DT. At least they eat well and don't face ammonia.

Meanwhile, you start a robust cycle in another container; using other compact form of medium is best.

It will take about 21 days to cycle under ideal conditions. You can then use the cycled medium to support your fish as you eradicate ich.

In the next 21 days, you may well have to repeat treatment and return to DT at least once.

TT is moot when infestation in DT has already taken place. This is because you need to wait 12 weeks for the DT to fallow. You need to support your fish for the next 12 weeks. The thrust of TT is not meaningful when ich infestation in DT is a reality.
