Going to be on a 5 hour flight.
Have about 50 hermits, can't take them on carry on.
Will they survive without a heat pack in the plane in my luggage(not carry on)
Urgent!

they should be fine.i got some shipped to me in a standard shipping box and they made it with no heat pack 3 days later

It's just that I heard that temperature where they keep the cargo is in the negatives,so I was just worried.

No that is not true, the ACM's are ducted under the cargo floor panels (usually), and are usually vented out through the side panels, also the cargo area is extremmmly well insulated. It has insulation, Fire Blanket, then paneling. Then RTV is applied at all the seams.

In fact if the pilot didnt turn the ACM's on (pack 1 or Pack 2), the ARINC cooling system alone would keep it nice and toasty.

Fwd cargo pits are heated aft pits are not. Acm (air cycle machines) only provide cold air. The air used to pressurize the airplane is bleed air from the engine. The air is extremely hot so the Acms are used to cool it down. This air does not flow threw the cargo pits but does pressurized them. Basically the pits are full of bags and sealed so if a fire would start it can be extinguished. Air flow would feed the fire. The forward pit is heated by running air from the electronics in the front of the airplane under the floor. Pets are always placed in fwd pit. There is no way to know where they will put your bag.
I would make sure your crabs are in the center of your bag an well insulated. Crabs can get very cold and still make it.

"This air does not flow threw the cargo pits but does pressurized them". :headwally: Wow

Wow please dont chime in anymore, "This air does not flow threw the cargo pits but does pressurized them." "Air flow would feed the fire" again WOW..."aft pits are not" again WOW

Lets break it Down, Boeing 737 Classic/ NG heated controlled, all MD 80'S controlled heated, ATR Heated, CRJ 700 ,900 Heated, CRJ 200 not heated, ATR heated, I can keep going

Class C: Compartments that contain both the smoke-detection and fire-suppression of a minimum initial concentration of 5 percent Halon throughout the compartment to suppress any combustion to controllable levels. Thereafter, the system must sustain a minimum concentration of 3 percent Halon for 60 min to prevent reignition or spreading of the combustion.

Class D: Compartments that depend on oxygen deprivation to prevent and suppress combustion.

Class E: Compartments that have a smoke-detection system alert the flight crew within 60 sec from the time smoke first appears in the compartment.

The holds are sealed and pressurised but have no fresh air circulation. They have no temperature control but are heated by exhausting cabin air around their walls. The forward hold also has additional heating from E & E bay air. Live cargo can be carried on either cargo compartment but the forward hold is preferred.

The optimum distribution for loading the cargo holds to keep the aircraft in balance is as follows:

The snails will be fine if packaged well.

As stated the effectivity. This issue is closed, and as you stated AFT pits are not heated and that is a very wrong statment for the most part. Remeber airlines dont make money if you cant ship live animals (like dogs and cats)

I am not sure why you are showing me the fire surpression system? He was just asking if the snails are fine.....But it is good to know that if the snails are on fire that the pilots have a 60 sec for a warning and that depending on the zone they will be put out accordingly. Thank You that was very helpful

You said wow and told me not to chime in. I'm just trying help save this snails. They need to be packed well to stay warm.

Here is what one airline says

Pets may not travel in the baggage compartment of all or some of our aircraft on the dates and for the reasons listed below. Please note also that temperature controlled and ventilated baggage compartments are available only on certain aircraft.

Pets are not accepted on the following aircraft: CRJ 100/200 (CRJ) CRJ 705 (CRA) Embraer 175 (E75) Embraer 190 (E90) Beech 1900D (BEH) On select Air Canada Express flights operated by Air Georgian, and select Air Creebec, Calm Air, Pacific Coastal, and Air Labrador flights

Important: Although not restricted, the cargo compartments on our Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aircraft are not heated and temperatures can be as low as two degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit), so it is not recommended to transport animals on these aircraft during the winter season.

That's far from the cozy temperature you were saying.

You may feel good flipping a cargo heat switch but most cargo pits are cold.

Some of the airlines have removed the insulation blankets under the floor boards because they can retain moisture and cause corrosion.
I provided a link proving there is not airflow in the cargo compartments.
They are sealed and not with rtv, they use fire resistant fiberglass tape.

Next time you fly go feel the bags coming out of the pit.

Correct as stated above 200 not controlled, ERJ not controlled, and as stated it depends on the effectivity. I agree with some of what you are stating, but not all. Every airline operater is different however a negative degree in the cargo is not correct. Also alot of the temp varies on the ambient temp... All I was stating is that you stated that all AFT Cargo is not controlled and that is not true. The person that asked the question was concerned that the cargo will get in the negative thats not true either due to the insulation, heating, ARINC , Bleed air duct, ect. AS far as the RTV is concerned I dont care because different airline operators will use diiferent sealant and it just depends on MAINT/Operation. As far as operaters outside the US I have no idea. You can buy a boing airframe and not have the cargo heated if you wanted agian it depends on the effecitivity. Most part 91 operators that are wide body have a heated cargo.....Man this was some work.

Also the list that you have supplied is a very small number of aircraft that alot of domestic airlines dont use with the exception of CRJ 200's
