The new koralia's are supposed to be able to run on a wave maker and not start in reverse. however mine start up in reverse every so often and I found that taking them apart and checking that the washer on the axel is properly seated fixes the problem. Have also found a really good mod for the older koralias that eliminates most all reverse starts and clacking.

I've heard that it's a problem with the bushings, but if you contact koralia, they will supposedly send you new parts to fix it for free. I haven't had any problems with the new EVOs, but the old Koralia 4s used to do that every now and then when I turned them off/on for target feeding.

Hey Icy....what is the mod for eliminating the clacking on the older models? I have 1 that does it every time I start them, only for about 3-5 seconds then it corrects itself, but if I can eliminate it that would be cool. Thanks!

i tried contacting them but my email got bounced back. i had the power off due to a circuit breaker popping and it reset itself when the power was put back on.
did you remove that little plug in the evolution? my impellor kept on hitting the plug that was in the discharge
i'd love the mod for the clacking on the old hk4...

Hey bud if the pump starts in reverse the impeller should hit that little plug stop then restart in the proper direction. May want to pit it back in. Also sent you a pm on the mod for the older pumps.

I have one that I modded too... It was still unreliable for my needs.I returned it to its org. and it ran flawlessly ever since....I still have three that don't. There great if some ones home all day but if your relying on it for alot of oxygen /heat regulation then I would say no.

Icy's koralia mod

the mod I came up with that worked the best was to take 1/4 inch piece of rigid airline and a 1/4 inch piece of silicone airline and slide/stuff the of piece flexible silicone over the rigid so that 1/16 inch of the rigid airline is exposed and 1/16 inch of the silicone is stickicking past the rigid then cut a small strip of the silicone airline 3/16 x 1/8 inch and stuff that inside the ridgid airline (this will act like a shim to keep the airline from sliding into the impeller and spinning) take the whole set and slide it over the axel with the silicone airline towards the impeller the push the axel into the front housing and push the airline up against the front housing
The way it works is when the impeller starts backwards it will travel up the axel hit the soft airline slow down and return to it's starting position and because it's spinning slower it will be more likely to stop spinning and start in the proper direction if you cut the pieces of airline to long the impeller will not hit the airline pieces hard enough and allow friction to slow it down if you don't put the "shim" inside the airline the piece will slide into the impeller and spin with it slowing down the impeller and giving the pump poor performance
Hope this didn't sound stupid it is a really easy mod to make I can complicate taking a crap so making an easy mod sound like rocket surgery is no problem I tried this mod on k1's k2's and k3's you really don't need to mod the k1's they pretty much always start in the proper direction and it worked great on the k2's and the k3's if you like you can cut teeth in the silicone airline to help catch and slow down the impeller the trick is to give the impeller a little bit of room to travel up the axil then slow it down and let it return to it's org position to restart and dampen the forward motion so it doesn't clack around the three piece approach worked much better at eliminating reverse start ups where a simple piece of rigid airline cut just shorter than the free space on the axel which only eliminated clacking
I came up with this when I noticed that my pumps were starting in reverse on my wave maker if you don't have a wave maker and only turn your pumps off to feed it may be easier to just stick a pencil or you finger in the pump to get them to stop and restart than going through all this also I found that after a certain amount of rime the silicone would become stiff under the water and you would need to make a other mod after a few months so I bought the new koralia evo's

Couple of pics when you get time would probably make you a hero on this site.
If you are the inventor I would call it (yourname-hydro mod).
Then see if the company would send you a few free ones for helping out thier bottom line as I'm sure alot of us here have nmigrated to other products to avoid these short falls.
