hey guys got a few questions...

Hey guys i have been MIA for the last few months, i have almost completed an entire kitchen and family room remodel. About 5 months in the making. It came out pretty kickin.

So now that the house project is almost done i have been focused on my tank again. I want to change a few items and want to know opinions and thoughts.

1. I need to replace my MH 250 SE bulb, about a year old. I was thinking of going with the XM 250 SE 15K. I'd like a bit more growth and it is cost effective. Anyone use this bulb? Any others you recommend? I have a radium now and did like the color but always looking to change things up

2. I finally hooked up my dosing pumps a few months ago and things were going fine for a while, then the ALK got stuck on some how. I have the BRS doser and the RK2 showed no power to the ALK doser but it still kept running and it was not a siphon. Anyone had this issue before? I am going to call BRS and ask to exchange but it is close to a year i have had it. but only used 2-3 months. I am thinking of switching to Cal reactor just seems easier? What do you guys think? Do you like cal reactors or 2 part better? I still do not have that many SPS but i have about 220 gallons.

3. I have a huge....skimmer. PMXL2 the thing is 3 feet tall and rated for 700 gallons. It works great but it uses a GenX-55 to run and it a really loud. I was thinking of switching it out for a Reef Octopus extreme 250. Quitter, less watts and less room. What do you think?

4. Our house is a 2/1 so space is at a premium. The skimmer and sump cabinet with chiller, fuge supplies take up a lot of room in one of the bedrooms. I plan to move it all to under the house where it will be cooler in summer and in an enclosed area in the garage under the house. I would gain a lot of space and not hear any of the equipment running. That will make the wife happy. With that said i would have to go down to the garage every time i want to adjust things and i can not see the tank from where all the equipment would be located. I do not have access from the house to the garage i have to walk out the front door and open the garage, go in the enclosed area to access the sump and equipment. I'd have to figure out how to make all the electrical have longer runs, i guess alot of extension cords.....

5. I still think my biggest issue with growth is being consistent with water quality, between cal , alk and mag I still do not feel very comfortable. I've been in this hobby for almost 1 and 1/2 years! jeepers

6. In the mean time of trying to figure out the ALK and CAL with the BRS doser my PH probe went wacky and i thought i had high PH, it was gradually moving up. So i changed to recipe two BRS to lower the PH. Well when some things started to look bad i decided to check the PH with a test kit and sure enough it was 7.8 -7.9 at end of the day. So i replaced the PH probe and now i am bringing the PH back up slowly. Things are starting to improve again.

7. I'd like to add one more rock feature and a few more fish. I still need to post pics of my tank, heck it has been running almost a year and i only have a dead build thread showing the empty tank. I do have all the pics it is just making the time to post.

8. I got a few scratched from sand particles, anyways to buff them out of the glass with water still in the tank, the scratches are at the top of the tank.

9. Also i am going to donate a few frags back tot eh clud of some items that i won a long time ago. I was an idiot and put 2 sps like right next to each other and now they are touching and "fighting" mine as well frag it for someone else. Don't ask me the name or I'll just make something up. haha it is purple blue.

Anyways I'll make my best effort to be at the next meeting to see all you guys and help Bob out on his tank. I always liked rimless, i wish they made a bow front rimless.

excuse the long post, had a bit of stuff to get out! haha

Shane you have too many questions ... lol j/k

I have answer to two of them :D

XM 15k is a waste of money.

Smaller skimmer and using less energy is the way to go.

I agree with Tom on the XM. Very little par. I like EVC bulbs but they are hard to get from reefscience. It takes forever for Chad to ship them. I haven't found anybody else that carries them.

hi shaneh i have a aqualine 1300 k 250 watt se and a sunburst 1200 k 250 watt both are brand new if you want one its yours pm me

paul17 thanks for the offer but i order my bulbs. I went with a hamilton 15K.

I'm going to keep the skimmer for now but it sounds like a jet engine in the room, cool to look at but not hear. It's like rushing water sound and i have the silencer on it.

I'm doing great on my cal 420 and alk 8. I'm still trying to raise them a bit to 450 and 9-10.

Ken i have a really nice chalice that i will need to frag up and i heard you have a wet band saw. It's green with red eyes. probably my best coral. I moved it up in the tank a bit to see if it will grow faster.

I'll do a mag test tonight, i hate mag tests! They take forever.

Shane is that Chalice call mojito by any chance? or is it the mumy eye?

The hammy 14k is nice and it is cheaper than the radium, as long as you run two vho then you will like the color

Tom i looked them up and it is a mummy eye! I love it.....it grows pretty darn slow....like 1/4 inch every few months. Anyway to make them grow faster?

I'm sure I got it from the club so i owe a few frags back. I need some help fragging it, give me another month or so to try and grow it out a bit more.

PH is up to 8.15 growing slowly and alk is 8 cal 420.

I have the mumy eye and it is groing just fine for me, chalice do tend to grow slowly when they are small once they get to about 2" in diameter they grow pretty fast. My bazoka joe is atleast 4 inches in diameter now.

When you frag make sure each frag has at least one eye and use a diamond blade band saw and you will have almost a 100 percent success rate.

So i was doing a bit of research on my BRS doser gettting stuck on and i found this on the BRS doser reviews....i had the same issue except mine was ALK not CAL!!! still bitter about my last alk burn. killed one of my fav corals......

Performance
Would you recommend ?

"Hooked these up to my Aquacontroller and has been working great for the past few months. Be careful tho. If you're using an old DC8, this unit will not switch off even if you use outlets 4 and 8. I learned the hard way and dumped a gallon of calcium into my tank."

The issue there sounds like power management by the Aquacontroller, not the dosing pumps. If the controller cleanly turned the power off the pump wouldn't run. Period.

And seriously, one absolutely has to check the performance of the programming by verifying that pumps turns on and off at the correct intervals, at least initially.

The weird thing is sometimes they do turn off and sometimes it wouldn't.....guess it is time to get a new controller. I have been eyeing the Reef keeper elite with ORP, Salinity, PH probe and internet connection.

Shane have to update the firmware for your aquacontroller lately? updating the firmware will also help reset your controller and fix whatever bugs that you might be experiencing. I have the aquajr and once in a while I update it with the latest firmware and it is going strong for over 10 years already.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! =) I was using 7 and 8 plugs....#7 my alk got stuck on....good to know for all Reef keeper 2 owners. I had to use 4 and 8.

Dosing pumps and lights

I recently bought a used RK2. I read the manual and have my lights on #4 and #8 outlets (6 t5 bulbs on 2 ballasts). I also started using dosing pumps for my 2 part solution for Alk and Ca. This is where my problem lies.

I tested the pumps and they were shutting off and coming on according to my settings on Multi timer. After one week, I noticed my alk and ca were being used up too quickly. These pumps are on #5 and #7 outlets. I realized the pumps are no longer shutting off with my settings. In fact, once they are on, the only way to turn them off is by unplugging them.

Can somebody please tell me if I plug my pumps into #4 and #8 outlets if this will solve my problem. But if I do this, will my lights work properly and come on and off when I set these.goody

Channels 4 and 8 are true mechanical relays which will turn ON/OFF with low power devices. All other channels are triac relays that sometimes won't release properly on low power devices. Depending on what type of lights/ballast you have will affect if they will work properly. Most likely they will work fine.-Ken

You can also try surge suppressors between the power bar and the pumps. This has been known to help in some cases.

Dannythanks,

Shane, in your post #9, the controller was described as Aquacontroller, not ReefKeeper. Had it said ReefKeeper, I could have helped you with that information.

oh woops well I'm glad i got it figured out....my tank is kicking butt best it has evver been. Looking forward to more growth!! =)
