guys me and rhett agree that my pump is too big for my overflow, ive played with the cut offs for a huge while and if my pump doesnt start running dry and my display overflows then my sump overflows,i need some help with whomever has an overflow thats rated for the quiet one 3000 pump,im not sure what my overflow is rated at,like an idiot i forgot to askeither way whom ever has or knows of an overflow thats rated for the quiet one 3000 pump, right now i have the caeto in my display which is ok but i also have filter pads in there too cause i dont want to put the filter i had on there back on,im tight on cash right now and ive put way too much money into this display

Put a Ball Valve on the return pump to regulate the flow, Pump size or Sump size does not matter! You can make it work with what you have, Just reduce the flow to the correct amount your overflow will handle.

yup ball valves are great!! i always put em in my plumbing any chance i get, whether it be coming from tank to tank or even to sump or from sump dont matter any pipe i have has a ball valve. dont buy the cheap ones either. they do work and function but the valves are hard to turn and i have had them stick on me in the past. so when purchasing them make sure you turn the valves a couple of times making sure they open and close somewhat easily. small resistance should be expected

i have ball valves and they are not working, for hours ive played with it over 2 days and nothing its either too much or too little :(

Choking down on the return pump should solve the problem. I dont see how it could not. As long as your flow into the tank is less than the maximum drain rate of the overflow drains....
A. there should be no overflowing of the display because the drains are draining under their maximum capacity.
B. There should be no overflowing of the sump because the drains should only be draining the same amount of water as is put in the display.

Try cutting all of your pumps off and see how far the sump fills up before it totally stops. If you have an overflow box for a drilled tank, it should stop draining once the water level reaches the top of the box. If it keeps draining further, check to see if there is a leak on the box itself further down from the top of the box. This would cause the water level to continue to drop overflowing your sump.

we'll see guys,i'll update this later when i install a gate vallve,im hoping that will help my tune it in better, thanks to those who have replied,i feel dumb being that this is my first sump and i wanna make it work cas of the money spent on it and me being on a tight budget

OMG guys im such an idiot lol i figured out the prob with my overflow over filling my sump at times and such, after i installed a gate valve i noticed that in my u tube that there was air caught in it and there for causing rising and falling water hight in my display and sump,i sucked out the air from it and wala lol perfect flow...in fact too much flow and i had to cut back my draining a bit to match my return pump lol aand now that i fixed that prob i have 2 others, tons and tons of bubles,so much that my return area gets alot and there for filling my display,a temp fix for it are filter pads i put in there and it attracts the bubbles and 2 is the hugh @ss noise it makes, heres a pic of my sump

well guys i just now checked it and damn thingwas lower then the line i had it at,i dont get what happened,i opened the drain cut off a bit more and set a new line, lets see what happens, its starting to frustrate me

this might be my breaking point,if i cant get this to work correctly then i think ill just get out the hobby, wish one of ya more expireanced guys lived by me ta take a look at this cause from what i can tell its set correctly and everything,im just really bumbed right now

Put a Sm 4" filter sock on your return line and It will break up the bubbles and quiet it down too. If it's making gurgling noise? Have you installed an airline in your return set up to let the water drain properly? What kind Is It? A Durso? Stockman Type? That's what I mean, So Don't give up you will get it, The first time is the hardest then it all seems easy.
Bill
PS, If your using a hang on Overflow, Sometimes just running a long piece of airline tubing down the return pipe will stop the gurgling noise Just find the spot where it quiets down.

i dont have a durso or anything, ill try the airline tube thing,i opened it up all the way,all my valves and it seems to all be stable right now.......for now anyways, thanks bill for da help this is driving me nuts and not allowing me to sleep

hey guys i notice that when i throttle my return pump back some that the flow coming back into my sump also slows, there by making less bubbles and not jumping my baffles,is this normal?

You have to find the right amount of flow to get it all going correct. You only need Approx 4-5 x turnover rate Thur the sump, It don't have to be wide open. So just slow it down until it all settles down.
Bill

well a few hours here at the hospital and we will be out for a bit longer, hopefully my sump or display hasnt overflown and or my pump hasnt run dry :(

dont fret so much about it. you just need to get it dialed in and you will be good. the microbubbles you are getting are coming fromteh skimmer and the flow from teh tank. I recommend you open teh flow from your overflow box wide open. then close the valve on the pump a bit at a time till you get the flow you want. the bubbles will slow when you throttle it back. your HOB overflow will only remove what your pump puts back in provided you have no air in the U-tube.

as for the noise, yes, they can make that noise. you should try it with twin 1 1/2" drains at 2000gph! sounded like the toilet on a cruise ship. I added a Hofer Gurgle buster. it is a home made devise that completely silenced the returns on my tank. Go look it up. it is small and can fit right in your overflow.

you are just a few tweaks away from success. we have all been there. unfortunately for many of us, sites like this werent around back then right bill?

Oh yea, and FYI, they dont like URL's in your signature. they made me remove mine.

you'll be tweaking that thing forever (we all do whether we admit it or not)..

just stick with it.. those hob overflows can be temperamental.. keep an eye on the U-tube, as any time that thing stops "draining", you could flood your display tank..
