Hey,

I'm new to Saltwater and just started up my tank on saturday! It's a 12 gallon aquapod. Just wondering if there are people here at Davis who are into reef keeping and where you go to buy your stuff. Btw, I'm a student at UCD.

Thanks
Jesse

Hi there :)

Davis doesn't really have any salt water places. PetCo doesn't count unless you need something basic real quick (though they do sell Formula frozen foods).

There is a thread just under this about LFSes in Sacramento which is where I go.

The campus group "Student Aquarist Society" may still be around as well. Try looking them up on Facebook, and contact Nate.

Jesse,

There are many people in Davis, probably even enought to start their own club! But all of us shop in Sac. PetCetera may have a couple basic things for you that PetCo doesn't but neither is a very good store for saltwater imo.

Hi Jesse,

Welcome to Reef Central and welcome to MARS! Rian is right. There are enough folks in Davis to start our own club (don't think we haven't thought about it - Aggie Reefers!) and a good number of us are on campus! I concur that there are virtually no commercial resources in Davis proper, but there are us fellow reefers. Shoot me a PM when you can and we'll get you connected.

Welcome Jesse! Ditto on the above posts. We've got a good group of Saltwater enthusiasts here in Davis (in Sac too ;) ), so let us know if you ever need anything :).

WOW thanks for all the responses. I feel a lot better now that I have buddies to trade and buy from and more importantly get advice from.

Welcome Jesse, fellow reefer at UCD as well. As many have said, there's nothing in Davis and Sac is your best bet for purchasing things. Post some pictures up of your setup when you get a chance!

If you're a student on campus, it is well worth it to look into being a helper for BIS 1B. The resources and knowledge you'll have at your disposal are enormous. It's located in the new building across from Storer Hall. You get units for it, get to play with all sorts of exotic animals, and can use excess natural salt water for your tank. :D

haha alright! more people from davis. hi there.

oh yeah I have a buddy who works in a lab ... and the room is filled with clowns. It's crazy.

1b is a great place to learn a lot about saltwater. maybe you can ask a ta for frags.. haha

Your buddy probably knows Shawn Acuna then. :D Sounds like the Conklin lab. Have those things started breeding yet?

lets define "buy stuff".

if you are looking for sand, rock, fish, inverts, coral - shop the stores in sac.

coral reef shop
your reef
o street
capital aquarium
exotic

if you want pumps, additives, test kits, etc. buy on line. all this type of stuff costs 2x the price in your local stores.

Hey very true Matt, is there anything out in vacaville, vallejo or benicia?Basically anything without crossing a bridge?:D

sea splendor is in fairfield on n. texas street. i'd say they are about equal to capital aquarium.

Oh, hell if I know. I go to a wholesaler in Hayward. I always thought Aquarium Concepts was pretty nice. I haven't heard of any stores in those cities, but there have to be, right? :D

I wish someone would give me a vistors pass and take me with em! Would like to see how these wholesellers work, would definately be a learning experience to say the least! :)
