That's the real reason Country Critters has this fish labelled as legally collected... they were one of the many businesses that got nabbed in "Operation Rock Bottom", which was centered around a wholesaler in the Keys... the same guys I dived with years ago in this thread...

Not long after that they became legendary for a different reason, along with a network of clients that included retail shops and public aquariums that knowingly trafficked in illegally collected wildlife that included eagle rays, sharks, live rock and corals collected in the Keys! Dick Perrin, the owner of Tropicorium and a legend in his own right, was also nabbed as part of this... along with illegally collecting his own baby alligators, all at the tender age of about 80!

The wholesale price I saw today was at 1200 and the Gem tang was on there at the same price, these were for mediums, smalls were a little more.

$100 was the wholesale price back in the day... when I was slinging fish in North Jersey in high school in the early 90s they were regularly available at Aqua-tropics (now Absolutely Fish) in Clifton for $300 to $400... the same price as purple tangs! Funny thing was that asfur angels were about double that price!

Great thread. Very interested in aquaculture. Not bragging but a pair of ocellaris clowns that I kept for several years in a mixed 65g back in the mid 80's were one of the first breeding pairs after I gave them to a friend who provided a quieter environment. With the slow collapse of tropical reefs due to increased temperature and lower pH from excess CO2 we need to rear our own fish. Thanks to all of you making the effort!!

According to google, clowns were being tank bred in the early 70's by Martin Moe

Ph and temp collapsing reefs? Like it has nothing to do with the millions of pounds of live rock or the millions of coral and fish taken legally or illegaly. Tank bred fish will have little to no effect unless done on massive scales

Do you know how many mom n pop stores, petcos, online salers, shore shops there are that take from the reef? In the world let alone usa

1. Wasn't Joyce Wilkerson the first? Or was she the first to write a good book about it?

2. Re what is collapsing reefs, certainly collecting has taken a terrible toll, and I can't quantify nor compare amounts of damage, but the impacts of temperature and low pH are seen by the hundreds of acres, maybe hundreds of square miles in some places. My personal observation is Caribbean where the reefs have much more algae and detritus than they did 20 years ago.

Aqua-Tropics switched to Absolutely Fish the year I graduated high school in '95... I worked ten minutes west at "The Pet Place" in Pompton Plains as soon as I got working papers in high school and then the first couple summers of college... while we were a good shop and had about 100 saltwater tanks, Aqua-Tropics was other worldly... their SW selection was unparalleled back then and would still hold up against the heavyweights of today... Aqua-Tropics had more of an influence on me than any other LFS in my life as a kid. It's great to see Patrick still having success there.

Wherever we are from in the world I'd bet a good bit of the LFS that influenced us as kids are gone... the shop that started me when I was young was "Rainbow Aquarium" in Wayne... small but father and son run... and it looks like they too are gone... along with "The Pet Place" I worked at...

This is also where I learned about frags as I broke a piece of the Acro and epoxied it to a rock. I figured it would die, but after 6 months I had a small colony starting to grow. Absolutely fish was still importing from the Keys at that time as well and I got some bright blue ricordeas that I have never seen again. They now reside in a tank in north NJ.

Nope... never heard of Everything Fish... I even searched and the only thing I found was old posts by you on it... here you mentioned Everything Fish opened their doors in '95... was definitely a different place... do you have any more references to it?

You're definitely thinking of a different place... search Aqua-Tropics and Absolutely Fish and you'll see a ton of references... and don't take my word for it... call Patrick the owner at Absolutely Fish.

I'm thinking of the saw, place, when I say they opened their doors I mean under the new name. I'm pretty sure it was everything fish for a few years. I need to look for the fridge magnent that I had from them. Or I could just be calling it by that name. I usually deal with the Ohio St graduate, can't remember his name off hand.
