High Nitrates...Okay in FO tank??

What the higest level you have let your nitrates get in your FO.

Im having problems with Head lateral line Disease. My Nitrates are 80ppm.

Im doing a 50% H2o change tonight. Im not sure why my trates crept up like this. Ive had the same livestock for over a year without problems?

I keep mine under 5, but I would start worrying at 20+ in a FO. Maybe something died?

Fish are generally very tolerant of Nitrates. What fish have HLLE, and what are you feeding them?

my highest hit 550ppm.
I was having a problem with my skimmer and didn't realize it (easy fix too)

I brought it down dosing vodka. It took a (I believe this was the size) liter of Kettle one (the very large bottle).
Now I dose sugar weekly and my nitrates are never over 20ppm.

Wow. They have test kits that go that high?

no they don't.
I don't recall exactly what I did to get the number, but I had to cut the test in 1/2 (I think I used 1/2 RO/DI water and 1/2 tank water) so I could get a higher number. I had do basically cut the test into 1/4's to get a final number (1/4 tank water and 3/4 RO/DI water). I would have to search my posts to find out exactly what I did.

btw, at 550ppm

I had a 9" queen trigger, 5" humu, 6" honeycomb foxface and blue shrooms growing in the sump.

While I doubt the critters thought their environment was good, they didn't seem effected.

Also, it only got that high bc I decided that since it was a newer tank,I had an XL skimmer (asm g4x with recirc) and a refuge that my nitrates would never get that high. Little did I know that my riser tube on the skimmer was blocking the out put and the skimmer and it was functioning about as good as an asm g1. I had it this way for about 6-8 months before I tested for nitrates.

Your nitrates shouldn't be an issue for you fish I have a 6500 gall shark and aggressive tank that runs 50-80ppm consistently with no ill effects.

my tank is a fowlr, 175 gal bow,with a 20 gal. refu.my rates run 20-50.i stopped worrying about getting them any lower.my fish are fine.was told by lfs anything under 80 is alright fo fo.
