Most likely his/her computer or keyboard must have malfunction

Right...Like Janet Jackson at the Superbowl a couple of years ago.......

I second the turkey baster, or pump. hook up a sock to your sump, shake up your rock, add more flow to your tank, add new carbon, and do a 30 % water change every week for two to three weeks and you should see some dramatic changes. my nitrates were always 30 to 40 until I removed my rocks and swished them around in one of my old water change containers and added 2 tunze pumps, now for the last 6 months my nitrates have been undetectable. the only time it shows up is when I needed to clean the filter sock, it's just my observation.

Nitrates in excess will bother or kill corals. IMHE, using refugium with macro algae will lower if not eliminate nitrate problem. You need to harvest from time to time and suppliment Iron also.
Try not to overfeed your fish and change or clean filters regularly if in use.
Good Luck!

Nitrates...

1- Clean all mechanical filters as mentioned above
2- clean all substrate
3- search for anything dead/dying in tank
4- do 10% water changes twice a week until nitrates are down to workable level
5- reduce feeding/increase skimming
6- keep macro in refugium as mentioned in above also

As noted in above post as well, nitrates...like nitrites or ammonia, can become toxic if consistently at these high levels, not only for corals but fish as well.

Did your nitrates skyrocket or did you not check for a while, then notice they were at 50ppm? If it has been a while, maintenance may be key, but if just recently i would lean to a recent addition/death that is giving you your troubles.
