HIPPO now?

125g has been up for a month now. Cycled the tank with cured rock, went through very small cycle I added two clowns two weeks ago, cuc, few corals, and all levels are 0 except nitrate at 2-5.

Would adding a hippo at this point be ok? Also, are there any other tangs that are "easier" to keep then hippo tangs? I've never had a tang in my previous tanks due to the fear of them getting ich so easily but with this tank I think I'm going to finally get one.

All tangs are very susceptible to ick and should be quarantined prior to be placed in the aquarium

A hippo will eventually outgrow your tank, but you could try most of the zebrasomas and a few of the smaller acantharus like the convict or mimic tangs.

Tangs aren't for tanks that just finished the cycle either. They are more for 'established' tanks. :fish2:

If it was setup using live rock and sand and has handled the addition of the other fish/cuc/corals and seems to be maintaing a good balance why not? What is it that an "established" tank has that his doesnt? When does one say that the tank is "established?" Many people upgrade to bigger sometimes double the size tanks and add their livestock (including tangs). Why would that work and not this scenario?

I ask because i don't know not be a *****.

I agree with TampaReefer79 there are other fish to choose for a tank that has just finished cycling. When most people say established it means that the tank is stable and has been for sometime. New tanks still go through certain cycles. IMO Angels, Tangs, and mandarins should only be put into tanks that have been up for at least eight months. With regards to changing tanks many people transfer their sand or crushed coral over to the new tank.They can also transfer the fuge as well to the new tank. The transfer of this gives the bacteria a head start. Don't know if I helped.

Established = STABLE. No swings, all parameters are in check and stay that way. The reefkeeper knows how to test the water and knows what to do when something gets a tad out of whack. In other words, he/she's had a few months practice keeping the tank in a pristine condition. Which as we all know takes time. Even someone that has been in the hobby for years can't 'control' a newly set up tank - it will go through changes. 8 months is a good guesstimate for necomers...maybe even a year. Tangs also have certain requirements that won't be met in a tank that finished cycling yesterday. Especially if the person is unfamiliar with reef aquaria and or housing surgeonfish. They aren't for beginners in my opinion.

+1 too many tangs and angels die due to this reason. The only time you can place either type fish in a tank less than 1 year old is, if the tank was setup from an established tank already. Meaning all LR and majority of water came from a tank that has been established. But you are still taking a risk.
