hirocks

i just did a few days ago. another site was recommended where i was told the rocks are a little higher quality, but this place sells you more for cheaper, with free shipping so i took it

I got 60 lbs of their best about a year ago. It was large and there were three pieces with great shapes. One large piece when placed on the substrate created a perfect cave that my blackcap gramma lives in. The other pieces were large but very round and very dense. I used a chisel and hammer and reshaped them to get it to the point that I could use them as a base and stack other liverock on it easily. It has been in my tank for over a year and it looks good, but still looks a little different from my other Fiji rock.

did you find it difficult to break them?

see my problem is that I have lava rock as my base rock because it was the only thing the LFS sold and I didn't know better. The lava rock is fine (been in the tank since august) but I don't see much happening with it as it looks the same as it did when I put it in (and I have LR in the tank as well). So I wanted to replace the lava rock with something lighter, more porous, and calcerous. I came upon the hirocks website when I did some searching.

Just want your opinions as I am trying to make a decision. It's tough because I live in Canada and a lot of the sites I've seen don't ship here :(

Thanks

I have 30 or 40 pounds of Hirock in my tank that went in about a year and a half ago. I can't tell what is what anymore.

i'm not a big fan of high rocks...some pieces are sweet but usually about 1/2 o the order is very dence stuff...

Go with reeferrocks.com, much better rock, a little more expensive but it's well worth it.....each piece is individually wrapped for shipping too....

Here is a snippet from my build log RE: Hirocks.

I purchased 150lbs of the ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œOur Bestââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ rock from these guys. These rocks are mined from a coral bed quarry in Hawaii, and the folks at HiRocks purchase them by the ton and have them shipped to CA.

When I received the shipment (about 6 business days after the purchase), I was a bit disappointed at first. The rock appeared very dense, plain and I thought that 150lbs would have gone a bit further volume wise. The fist picture is a picture of the rock as it arrived and after I moved it into a single large box.

The rock did appear very dusty, so my brother and I decided to give it a good rinse. When I dunked the first piece in, I was struck by how quickly the water got muddy. After agitating the rock for just a few seconds and pulling it out I was shocked. The rock was very porous, had tubes, coral skeletons, and even a clam fossil attached! The holes appear to have been plugged with sand and were further obscured by the dust created from mining/shipping. It took us about 30 minutes to rinse it all down good though several baths, we must have ended up with about an inch and a half of sand in the bottom of the first tub. Thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s a few pounds of waste, but I hardly cared after being so pleasantly surprised with the quality of the rock.

The second picture is a picture of the rock rinsed off and stored in two 20 gallon Rubbermaid containers ready for placement in the tank. The last picture is a picture of a close up of some of the rock in my setup.

hmm.. i sent an email to refferrock.com. I'll see what they say, the rocks they have look great, and I like the idea of seeing it before they send it. Thanks!
