HLLE: Public aquariums and many maintenance companies (excluding guys in this forum)

Perhaps you could take them seaweed and Selicon and politly show them how to feed them.

the salon owners or the maintenance company?
I highly doubt the salon owners want to get their hands wet. This would be the reason they paid a company to bring in a tank and take care of the tank.
As for the maintenance company, he linked me to an article that had all this info already in it. I would guess he would claim the hlle is from some bug and not the other 10 contributing factors for hlle.

If I had to guess I'd say those seahorses are better cared for then most that end up in a hobbyist tank even with those hazards present.

that is probably some what true. It is also most likely much easier for an public aquarium to order more fish than to properly care for them.

Wow. These are just absolutely unfounded statements bordering on ridiculous.

to them its all just money, to us its pleasure.....you should go to the hole in the wall fish stores and see how bad some of the fish live. the human race is overall rather ignorant....glad to see you tried to change his view on hlle but dont get your hopes up....no one cares....its sad.....i think we need to have a rating system where we can rate LFS and if they get an F maybe it will deter newbs from going there....take action

Just my opinion... but keeping salt water fish in a home aquarium seems to have come a long way in success over the past 10-20 years. Marine biologists, at least the ones that I speak to, are mainly focused on the big picture of marine life and seem to be lagging in newest trends in keeping reef fish (in most cases). Precisely why you can go to most any aquarium and their "reef tanks" cannot even compare to a novice's tank in our hobby. With the funding they have (I know not much, but still more than me) :p they should have far superior reef tanks that rival the best in our hobby IMHO. I have yet to see a reef tank at a public aquarium that impresses me (I know they're out there, but not at most)

Also, I have known several aquarium maintenance owners that I would not trust watching my tank for a weekend while I go on vacation. They're out there and they definitely all think they know what they are doing. I still know a guy the uses amquel for his fresh TO for the reef tanks he takes care of, and yes... his philosophy is "he can always buy another fish to replace the ones that die"

Salty does not seem to me to be off base, rather his assumptions make him seem that way.

Atlanta Aquarium, the largest one in the US has a great looking reef tank called tropical diver with a wave maker that pours 6000 gals every time.....pretty nice tank. They also make newb mistakes........their first pair of whale sharks had leaches so they tried to treat them when they knew nothing about this animal and guess what.....they killed them both, now they have four whale sharks and all of them have leaches which gave leaches to all of its tank mates....true story
