Hmm, the bucket doesn't fit . . . .

Well, I've finished assembly on my new 125 FOWLR. Has a 55 gal sump underneath. Just added 140 pounds of live rock which is curing nicely (meaning the wife hasn't kicked me out of the house due to the smell). Here's the problem.

I've changed water with 5 gallon buckets all my time in the hobby, fresh and salt water. Siphon into one bucket and pour in replacement water from a bucket when the siphoning is complete. However, pouring water into a sump underneath a tank is a challenge. This is a bit of an issue for me because I'm an obsessive water changer.

The question:

Does anyone have a nifty little pump/hose arrangement that they use to pump water back into a tank or sump from a bucket? I'm considering a few options, but I've found about anytime I've run into a problem, there's generally many solutions people have already devised that are better than what I'd come up with alone.

Many thanks in advance for any advice anyone might offer.

do exactly what you said, get yourself a small pump, hook some flexible tubing to the output, stick it into the bucket and pump the water into the sump. its also easier to mix teh water in a trash can and pump it all in at once so your not doing bucket after bucket.

5 gallon bucket for a water change on a 125G? You need to move up to a Brute trash can!

My water change setup:
Fill 25G of RO/DI into the Brute can with a Mag3 and a heater, add salt. Mix overnight.

Hook garden hose up to outside faucet, get water moving though it. Disconnect, run it into house and dunk it in the sump, siphon out water. It runs down the driveway.

Clean sump as necessary

Turn off Mag, connect hose to it. Turn it back on and pump SW into sump.

Works for me. Of course you need the right house setup to do the garden hose siphon drain thing.

Oops, I should have mentioned that I do mix in a large rubbermaid trash can to the tune of 25 gallons or so. Its always been just a 5 or 6 step trip from the rubber maid to the tanks.

You are probably right, I'm trying to over think it. It sorta comes along with the DIY/geek personality I have.

Hmm, maybe some wheels for the rubber maid . . .

OMG. If I let 25G of dirty saltwater run down my driveway, then down past the front of 10 neighbors' homes, the association would put a lien on my house!
