Triggerfish have two dorsal spines and filefish have one. Triggerfish can lock their dorsal spines erect and you can't pull down the first one by itself. If you pull down the second one the first one will come down with it. That is why they are called triggerfish.

Similar in a 2d picture, but when you see then inperson you can tell there not from the same family. Hope that helps. File fish usually eat coral polyps too
