HOB filter setup

Iam wanting to start a a small 10 gallon tank with easy corals and 1 to 2 fish I will have live rock and live sand and a HOB skimmer I was wornding if anyone could tell me the best kind of filter and what to put in the filter or do I just put the normal things in it like a freshwater tank I know sumps are best but can't afford a new bigger setup any helps is much appreciated

If you have a HOB skimmer you dont need a filter. Your skimmer and the rocks will do all the filtering that you need.

I like the Fluval (formerly Aquaclear) filters. A 10 gallon tank really doesn't need a skimmer, weekly water changes will be enough for nutrient export. I use my hob filter to run a sponge, chemi-pure elite and some GFO.

I use an Aquaclear 70 with filter floss, purigen & phosguard bags and some Biomax. HOB filters are good for removing the big stuff and running certain chemicals that don't need a reactor. When it comes to filtration, go bigger. Filter or skimmer rated for your tank size? Go bigger. Sometimes manufacturers are a bit generous with their ratings and their product may not keep up with a tank size they rated it for.

Thanks guys the aquaclear 70 was actually the one I was Considering getting anyone have any Info on how I should do the lighting schedule while it's going through the cycle process

You really don't need the light on while cycling.

I have a fluval c3 with chemi pure elite in the basket and purgin instead of the fluval bio nodes

I run 2 AquaClear 70's on a 20gal cube with no problems.

So no lights while cycling I guess run run the filters and clean them like normal and do water changes weekly during the cycle?

If you get an aquaclear 50 they sell an intank media basket which is basically a hang on refugium and I know a LOT of people have had success with that route

I got the aquaclear 70 actually what about lights I was gonna get t5 bulbs are those good ones?
