HOB Filters?

Does anyone use them for their nano? I was told that they are unnecessary. I thought they would be good for circulation and place to hold filter material- ie- carbon, pad, phospahte reducers.

what are your thoughts?

I think they are probably the best way to go between tanks like 5g to 15g. I use Aqua Clear filter on all my tanks through that tank size. They can be modified so you can put LR rubble in the back and have sand and some macro algae making it into a nice fuge. I cheap and you can do whatever you want with it. But say if you are going up to 20g through 30g.....for a nano of those sizes i personally would go with a sump and skimmer. But in anyways alot of people use HOB filters for thier nano use.

I have a modified aquaclear 500 on my 10 gal nano. I'm using it as a refugium and for circulation.

If you were to go with a skimmer like a Remora, they have a media chamber for carbon, phosphates, etc. Skimmers also provide more than enough water circulation. If you are deadset on using one at least remove the filter pad, as all it does is trap detritus and produce nitrates. Once again they are unnecessary, although they seem to be more popular for use on nanos... dont know why

I use AC 300's with a 150 propeller to slow it up. On both of my 10 gallon setups. Maybe poly-filter and some chemi-pure every other month.
Tanks look great, but ALL of the LR, LS and critters are going into the 24 aquapod. LESS electricity plus it will be down-stairs now. The two 10 gallons are up-stairs. I do have and use a Prizm skimmer on them to, work great.

Yes, but I would ONLY buy AC 300 or 500. Then you can use the compartment for what ever you want. Or just run a skimmer and a powerhead in the tank.

I am waiting for some one to come along and do a small hang on back refuge for nano tanks. They make them for larger tanks and they are pricey. Some have modified their hob filters but I would like a larger fuge/filter with a skimmer built in. Seems like manufacturers would get the hint after they see people modding regular filters into fuge"s.

do you think it would be wise to remove the filter from a HOB and put some chaeto in it to soak up some nutrients? i have a 3 gallon nano and would like the benefit of the chaeto, but don't want it floating around the tank.

I run an AquaClear on all my tanks. It adds circulation, is a place to trow carbon if needed and works as a primative fuge as it grows algae on the waterfall output that I can cleanup when needed.
