Hole in the back of the 9010

Hey everyone, I have had my 9010 up and running for about 2 weeks. I had it sitting in about 11" of water before, but decided to raise the skimmer up so that the water level was about 8.5" based on some feedback I received about most effecient water level.

This seemed to have helped the skimming, but now the hole in the back is above the water line. Of course there is a stream of water coming from this hole, and it makes noise. I don't mind so much but the wife is not digging it since its right next to our couch.

I was wondering if there is any way to calm this down? I guess I could always lower the skimmer back to the bottom of the sump, but would prefer this to be my last option sense raising it did seem to help the skimming.

BTW, I am very happy with this skimmer so far. It was pulling more crap out of my tank with this thing then I ever would with my Oct HOB, and there was only live rock in my tank :)

Thanks for the help

Oh, another question if I may...Is there a good way to have the top cover (Not the collection cup) be on the skimmer secure? Is it normal for it to leak a little water? When I say leak, its barely a dribble, but it is some. I did make sure that all of the guides were in place, even that tricky little one in the front middle.

Oh yeah, I tried the mesh mod today, but made one fatal flaw, I attached the enkamat with small zip ties, and not fishing line. Of course this caused the impeller rub so I removed it. I just re-read the other post, and will have to retry with fishing line. :)

I had the stream of water fall into a small tub with some filter media in it, that was clipped to the side of the sump. Also could try have the water close to a sump wall, so it hits the wall and runs down it.

barngeatbayman,
I figured I would try this mod out, its simple (even though I did it wrong) and not permanent.

Flatlander, I will go ahead and put it closer to the wall to see what happens.

It is normal for some water to trickle out at the top. This piece clips on and is removable for servicing the skimmer.

Why would you mesh mod a venturi skimmer? The air is never coming in contact with your mesh.

Other people seem to have luck with it, but if its useless, then I guess it was a waste of time...I could have swore when I opened the pump, that air and water were getting pulled in by the impeller, but then again i have not analyzed how it works.

Here is a diagram of it. The air is being pulled on the outlet side of the pump.

Yes, you are correct, sorry about the confusion on my part. I guess the mesh mod was not what was helping, maybe it was the guys adjustable outlet pipe doing all the work.
