ok my tank was 86 today!! i am breaking down and getting fans.

I am an electrical moron. I have never wired anything. What type of fans should i get and how can i wire them? This needs to be done asap so any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!

Just get a plug in fan and set it on the bottom of your stand next to your sump, just an ordinary room fan. A pillar fan works really well and has a small footprint.

i need a fan because its an enclosed canopy....VHO so i didnt think i would need fans...i was wrong. So i will just cut a hole and insert the fan on the side of the canopy...any suggestions on what type of fans??

thanks

If you have a sump I would suggest getting a clip on fan and mounting it underneath to blow directly on the water. If you don't you are going to have to cut holes on each side of the canopy and install computer fans. One pulls in cool air and the other side should push out warm air.

You can get 3" and 4" fans at radioshack.

They have AC and DC fans. The AC are cheaper but probably more dangerous(higher voltage). Being the tight wad I am I went with AC.

I soldered my connections and wrapped them with shrink tubing.

Anyone at Radio Shack should be able to help you out. If you need more help let me know, I'd be glad to help.

Soldering irons are really cheap. The soldering iron would cost less than the fan. I think my last one was about $8.00

If you want to swing by one day after work we can go to Radioshack and bang it out in about 15min I have a soldering iron, solder and shrink tubing, all you would need to buy is a fan and a power cord.

I'd start out with one fan and see how it goes, I doubt you'll need two.

PM me if your interested.

jasutton, they advertise 'cool heat' soldering irons that supposedly work fine for small electronics.

Jon, i got my fans through Jim at Coral Paradise. I attahed them onto some shelf brackets on the open back of my canopy and wired them to a plug! It was easy and they work great. :D

Go to Frey's electronics and get some quiet computer case fans and a 12 volt transformer. Just run the fans at the same time the lights are on. I have the Icecap ones with the temperature sensor but they run all the time at high speed so its a waste of money for me.

This is the correct advice. You can find cheap adjustable DC power supplies at Wal-Mart and harbor Freight.

Vantec Stealth fans are reasonably quiet, fairly cheap, and should be easy to find.

DC fans are also quite a bit quieter than AC fans.

I would get a cheap 4" hole saw from Harbor Freight, cut a pair of holes, and put the 4" fan blowing IN on one of the holes.

The uglier, louder, and cheaper option would be to throw a clip on fan over the sump.

Edit: Also, i'm not sure why you would need to solder anything.

My tank hit 90F today!
I bought 12" fan at Walgreen for $12 cooling my entire 10G sump from the top.
There is no damages on fishes and corals yet.
I hope this works well.

The reason I soldered my fans was because I bought 4" AC fans from Radioshack that don't come pre-wired so I soldered power cords on to them. Their a tad loud but they move a ton of air!
