So I get this email from paypal saying I received over $1100 in cash. Yeah right. About to click as spam. Then look at the link. It isn't pointing me to Denmark or Haiti. Hmmm.

Read the message. Says re: litigation/class action.

Well, 2.5 yrs ago someone hacked into my paypal acct to the tune of over $14K, against my checking and credit card accts. Their customer service was absolutely horrific. Took over 6 months to get the money back. Or to get them to unfreeze my acct on the credit card chargeback complaint. They never fully reimbursed the credit card company I don't think. Never really found out.

Didn't use paypal for over a year, but then Western Union Bidpay went belly up. So did usps online payment service. So now no choice but paypal.

Anyway, about a year ago I got an email that also looked like spam, but it was about a class action vs. paypal. I took a risk and clicked on that link. Was legit, a form, etc. Filled it out. What the hell. Their service was so bad, I wanted to go at them.

Well, tonight I get this message that says I had received $1100+ payment on this. Go into my paypal account (not from the link) and there it was!!!

Woo-hoo.

What to buy, what to buy, what to buy.

Hmmm. Don't really need anything. Wavebox would be nice but that would be stupid I think.

Gonna have to think on this one. About time I got news like this. Think I have to put about 60% against the credit card debt. But that nightmare consumed hours of my time. I ain't gonna feel guilty spending this little bit of money 3 years later.

If you were part of that class suit, check your spam folders!

Even a blind rat finds the cheese once in a while! The price of Cheto, just went up... I have plenty to spare, and if you can get more Cal/kalk I sure can use some. Next week sounds good so plan on stopping BUY...
 
I remember getting an email about that law suit against them.. But I dont htink I ever followed through w/ it and filled it out

EXACTLY one hour after your frickin post, BOOM!

Power out. 11:10pm. On at 3:30. Fortunately, our animals mostly can do fine with 4 hours of stagnant water, especially if that happens at night.

Now, however, treating myself "to something nice" is probably out of the question. I need to look into power backup options.

Gotta do some research. A $4K natural gas generator is out of the question. Have to look at some less expensive option that can get me 4hrs.

The APS unit on the computer seems to work this way: power goes out, battery kicks on full blast whether anything is plugged in or not. 20min later, battery drained.

That's no good. Need something more variable output than that.

So much for the windfall. I had 90min of good luck.

I researched the backup idea for weeks and this is what I decided to do:

Not purchase anything until there's an actual power loss. Then, if it really lasts more than an hour or two, I'll pick up a dry cell battery at Farm Fleet and an converter (alternater?) that day.
 
Yeah, good idea Ed. And then, the power goes out at 11:10pm. What then?

So, I lost your number but if you can give me a call I'd like to know what else your research turned up.
 
There's also some good battery backup systems but they require a lot of space...i.e. you can daisy chain an infinite number of marine deep cell batteries together.

Don't know if it would work for you or not, but i've got an extra 400watt continues (not peak) inverter, and 2 BIG 12 volt gel cell batteries. I have never done a test to see how long it would run at say 75%, but I would think it would be a while with these batteries. This is not a Walmart special, it is an indutrial inverter. I wasn't really looking to sell it, but I could always be persuaded with a trade. I have 2, and so far have not needed them, so I would probably part with one.
LMK if it sounds like something that might work.

Mike: which do you use? I'm looking at the Honda/Yamaha/Kipor 1000W super quiet inverter generators. Seems like it'd run like $500 or so if I get lucky. $$$

Dave: I know almost nothing about these things. But 400W continuous seems like it's run out fast? Can you give me a ring to discuss if you can tell me more? I'll email my phone number.

I'll give you a call this evening when I get home, and can get the exact spec's on everything. But the 400 watts is what the inverter can run pumps, powerheads, etc(total draw), this does not determine how long it will run. The batteries will determine that. If I remember correctly they are rated at 8 hours with a 120 amp load. My guess would be that 400 watts wouldn't draw more than 10 amps max, so that should give you at a minimum 24 hours before they run down, probably more.
 
What I can't figure out is whether those batteries need some special ventilation or not. Also, I worry about keeping them in the fishroom. I'd need somehow to isolate them from the saltwater. But that is doable, I would think. Someone mentioned the need for fuses/gfi in there somewhere before the battery. That concerns me too, not sure how to do that.

This is all very complicated...

Its big enough for what you need and has a built in battery charger. It runs like a UPS, it monitors the power input and detects for any outages then turns on. The only down side is that its as with most computer UPS and Cheaper generators a Square Wave output which is very hard on pumps. I would plumb in a seperate pump of little value to run off the inverter. Or just a heater and an air pump. With this to get a longer run time all you have to do is daisy chain batteries together just be sure to no overload the charger.
 
But I think those AGM batteries Greg's thing points to are the better kind of wave output? Or no?

If I do this I'd like ot run my return pump (Sequence Hammerhead). Don't want to kill it...
 
They dont really hurt the motor they just cause it to run at a Higher Temp. The motor pulls more current. thats all.

Also your Sequence has an industrial motor on it and you should be fine. Its pumps like RIO's and powerhead types that you'll get the problem.

As for the batteries, they have nothing to do with the wave output of the UPS or Inverter that you use. Thats all related to the Inverter or UPS. In his article he is using Deep Cycle marine batteries which have a Huge power capacity which allows longer run times. compaired to a regular car battery. They take longer to charge thats all.

If your worried about the output of the UPS then you could always get a power line conditioner. That should clean up the wave.

I am seriously considering this setup as my power was out for almost 13 hours last night and Im in Indiana.
 
The good thing about the Tripp Lites is they go on automatically when power goes off. These do so too but less $$$

I wonder, if I get the deep cell battery could I also run a fridge and computer along with the pump? Then the house would basically remain in business.....
