Home invasion (not reef related)

I agree with Brian...I won't be letting anyone in my house anymore I don't think...Even for coral as I just can't trust anyone nowadays...That is a really sucky feeling...

Having a dog in your house for security isn't the way to go. Most dogs will turn and run anyway, but if they do attack someone, even though they are breaking into your home, you can get sued for thier injuries. I had a guy try and steal my dirtbike from my shed one time and my Rotti got him pretty good. My insurance covered it all, but they won several thousand dollars for thier injuries in court. It's the same as most police will tell you that if someone is breaking in your home while you are there and you shoot them, make damn sure you kill them or you will get sued for thier injuries. It's a sad situation, but it's the truth. Cameras are your best bet. If you step on my property you can bet you are being video taped.

Don't lose trust in people in general over a few scumbags. 98% of people are good trustworthy people, it's the 2% that aren't that give the rest a bad name.

Sorry about your loss, but just be glad nobody got hurt and get a bigger TV that is harder to carry off next time lol.

Just because your sued doesnt mean they will win a case. People sue way too much and most are thrown out of court in these type situations. If you are in fear of your life, you have the right to defend yourself anyway possible. Ie the castle law.

As far as the dogs go, I train schutzhund and have two titled dogs. You come in my house unwelcomed and intend to due harm you will get bit. Again if Im in fear of my life I have every right to defend myself and family wether by a gun or a a dog that is trained to be a body guard.

I run on dog bites often at work and never seen a home owner go to jail when their dog bit a trespasser or taken away by animal control. However if your dog is off poperty and bites some one then things are different. Or if you have a known agressive dog that has been reported to animal control things can differ as well.

I have also seen when people have signs like "beware of dog" or "guard dog on duty", "bad dog", you are opening yourself to liability. These type cases have lead to the trespasser winning in court due to the fact you know you have a dangerous dog and posted on your property. Not right but it happens.

I actualy have a female shepherd with puppies posted on my fence. It has no writing on it, just cute puppies. Just to show I have a shepherd.

What I meant by having a dog as security is. If a thief has a choice between your house with a barking dog, which draws attention, and a house with no dog. The house with no dog is easier to break into. Now what the dog is going to do on the other end who knows .

It is true that a dog may deture a robber, and you do have the right to defend yourself, but i'm speaking from experience that you can be sued if your dog bites an intruder and they can win. I thought it was pretty ridiculous myself, but i got sued and lost because the rotti was considered a viscious breed. I had no signs posted either. It's a stupid law, but it can and does happen. I didn't have to be in court, so i have no idea how much they won, but State Farm had to pay the idiot for trying to steal my bike and i had to pay an extra $30 every 3 months for 3 years as penalty to the insurance company lol. I'm sure that was nothing compared to what they won in the case. That's why your insurance company makes you carry special liability insurance if you have a dog that's listed as a viscious breed.

I now use video and a 12 guage shotgun lol. If i'm not home, they will be on video, and if i am home, my smiling face will be the last thing they ever see.

Sorry to hear about the break-in...

I was robbed while at work with both Australian Shepherd and a Rhodesian Ridgeback in the house. The cops were shocked that they had the cahones to come into my house with the dogs around, but they trashed my house by throwing anything heavy at the dogs to keep them at bay. They made out with a laptop and over $50K worth of jewelry I had inherited.

I have a security system now, since burglars will sometimes poison dogs to gain access. If that happened, I would never get over it.

I know of a few folks down in south Florida who were robbed and the burglars took a baseball bat to their aquarium, just for the heck of it. *Shudder*

My advice: be careful what you put out with the trash...I had just bought the laptop and put the box out with the garbage. According to the police, someone probably drove by and noticed I had just bought a brand new MacBook.

sorry

sorry

I am sorry to hear for your lost. What was stolen can be replace. Whoever stole from you guys gonna get what they deserve one day.

Yes. Castle Doctrine is in effect in quite a few states, including Florida. Politicians are tired of criminals suing victims for injuries sustained in a crime, and they are handing power back to law-abiding citizens. It's your *right* to choose to defend yourself on your property with all necessary means now, including lethal force.

I hear ya there...I just don't fathom why people would want to take others stuff...Get a frickin JOB is all I have to say...Most I guess don't know how to wipe let alone do that...Pretty Sad
