I recently bought a house and had an indepth conversation with my home owners agent about this exact issue. He talked with the underwriters for Statefarm and this is what he found out.
Any damage caused by your tank breaking is covered like any other water leak/spill. If something happened to your house and the tank got distroyed, it is covered like any other piece of property.
What they do not cover is anything living. All your livestock that might be killed if your tank cracked and/or exploded is not covered. They would not even give a special writer for extra coverage when I asked them.
That was Statefarm, so you might wanna ask your agent. But it seems like most things that are covered by one of the big companies is covered the same way with them all.
There is not an insurance company that will cover any livestock for your aquarium. Only property and equipment like he said above. I have researched this thoroughly. Earthquake is a real possibility here. Tornados too! Just got to pray it don't happen!
It's all about the number crunchers. Since almost everyone, given enough time, has some major screw ups, it would cost an arm and a leg for the insurance. I'm sure if you want to insure it for 5K, you could buy a policy somewhere for about 5K a year.
Ins. companies like stated above will only cover Items damaged. If the tank Cracks and shorts out all pumps, lights and other equipment, all of that will be covered along with anything else in the house that was damaged. However No live stock will be covered.
I am an agent for Country insurance. Our policies are the same way. The home, flooring, wall, etc. would be covered, but the livestock inside the tank would not be covered.
The home stuff is my main concern, If my 180 gallon ever cracks my husband will never let me have another fish tank anyways, I just want to make sure we would get our house taken care of.
