homer1475's Biocube 29 Build Thread

Good point. Do they include optics with the pucks now though? I wouldn't do the puck in an enclosure without optics to focus the light downward.

Over our small cubes at like 2-3", I don't mind not having optics, but if I were doing any more height than that I would want optics to focus the light better.

they have a lens kit from what I recall but not sure of effort involved. They could easily flip his out since he just ordered. I would probably have to fiddle with mine.

Edit: They now have wide angle lenses for those close to the water but the biocube retrofit kit appears to be the standard lens so woudl not need modded. So homer and I would be good to go with the enclosure.

Finally!!!!! got my orange octospawn! I'll post some pics tomorrow after it opens up. Oh, and I picked up a couple small zoa frags I thought looked cool.

Pulled into the LFS and the sign said closed, open at 2(it was 12:30), I wasn't going home without at the very least looking to see if they still had one. Saw all the lights on so I figured someone had to be there. Tried the door and it was open. No lights on any of the tanks, and the owner was on the phone. I looked around and saw the same orange octo I saw 2 weeks ago. Owner got off the phone and told me they were closed. Got to talking to him(last couple times I've been there, he wasn't), told him I just drove 2 1/2 hours for this particular octo(he had 4 others but were green). He eventually sold it to me after shooting the isht for while, and at a discount! Nice guy and very knowledgeable, definitely one of the few LFS that really want to see you succeed and not just to try and sell you something. Was very interested in my setup, how long it was setup, what I currently had in the tank, and if I knew how to take care of this coral.

I will definitely be going back even though I think his prices are a tad high. I do have to say though, his dry goods are the same, if not cheaper then on the web.

Best part, this guy has a camp right down the road from my house. He told me that if I ever wanted something specific(like this octo), just give him a call, he'll either order it and bring it up, or if he has it he'll just bring it up on a Friday night(seems he comes up to his camp every weekend). Great deal! Saves me from driving a couple hours.

Thanks!

At just a tad over 4 months, I think it's doing good. Just can't wait to put my fish back in.

Oh and I picked up a black capped basslet, going through TTM now(no way in h*ll I'm getting ich again!). I figured as long as I got 8 weeks to go, he'll be ok adding to my QT with my clown.

So I promised pics tomorrow(which is today).....

orange Octospawn

Asst. Zoa frags

No clue on their proper names, and frankly I don't care either. When it comes to zoas, I buy what I like, and pay 0 attention to their names. I do however know a few of the proper names of the couple I really want, KO nightmares, and fruit loops.

Very nice frogspawn (sorry, I'll never call it octospawn :p )!

I'm interested to see how the colors adapt in your tank. It may become more translucent, but we'll see. How does it look under fluorescent lights?

It's greenish/orangish under actinics. All my pics are with white lights since my phone doesnt take actinic pics.

So ATO installed, reactor installed(minus the 3 gallons I spilled everywhere), and ended up getting rid of the top shelf that comes in the biocube cabinet. Kind of bummed I lose the shelf, but its all for the better. I have more room to install the drivers for the LED's. :D

So everything came in except the apex and light, but after reading here and emailing ecotech and neptune, I realized I needed the mp10QWD pumps, and not the regular mp10QD pumps, as well as the WXM module for the apex. I was going to send the pumps back to BRS and order the WQD pumps, but its cheaper to just order the RF module from ecotech(roughly a 40$ savings).

Light and apex should be here by tuesday, luckily I have wednesday off. I know what I'll be doing on my day off.

does the RF module give you the same level of control that the WXM does?

Why did you have to get rid of the shelf? Everything fits fine in my stand with plenty of room to spare. PICS man...

No No....

The WXM module for the apex controls the vortechs instead of using thier own interface. I need the RF module(wireless) inside the vortech interface so the apex can communicate with the pumps.

I got rid of the shelf due to my plumbing for the reactor. My wife doesn't want to see anything other then the tank, its hood, and stand. So anythign I can hide in the stand is better for me. Happy wife = happy life. :D

You asked for a pic, so here it is. I have plenty of room on the side to mount the apex and drivers. I was thinking of taking a sheet of 3/4 ply, painting it black, remove the cardboard back, replacing it with the ply, then mounting everything to that. Still thinking about it, and might still do it that way.

I would order in some more elbow connectors from BRS and move the reactor. With the elbows you could have it in the top shelf and retain that int he stand.

Yeah I totally zoned on buying fittings. I'll go to lowes and/or HD next day off and see if they have anything. If not I'll order online. Seems amazon is cheaper for those then BRS. Shipping charges are a b*tch though, 3.50$ fitting and 7$ for S&H. lol

Sitting in bed watching the hockey game thinking, why can't I use PEX piping to plumb the reactor? I have a ton of it in rigid and semi rigid with plastic elbows. It's what I plumbed my house with when we remodeled a few years back. My only concern we be the copper crimp rings. They are on the outside, but I wonder if they'll corrode?

Or even better, it's 1/2 OD so I wonder if it'll fit in the john guest fittings? Might have to try tomorrow. Being rigid I can make it nice and neat with less elbows.

You know, creating an account here on RC, and having a build thread where I can bounce my ideas of others is probably the best thing I've done since starting this tank. I urge any newbie to do the same thing.

yeah I got the fittings through BRS since I ordered some other items so it made sense

Funny part is, I just ordered the WXM module last night from BRS, with the fittings I could have made it free shipping. Just the fittings isn't worth the shipping price.

Lol at homer and reef talking about all the bad lfs around them, man the closest one to me is over 200 Km away

I actually feel really bad saying anything bad, because I know it's extremely hard to have a happy healthy LFS, with good prices, good selection, and still be able to cater to noobs as well as experienced reefers. It's great to have them around, and I really appreciate their dedication, availability, and knowledge (usually). It's just tough to see any livestock not doing well (I know, we don't have any idea of how bad it is at the wholesale level) or stores a mess despite how hard the store is worked on.

At least it seems like every year the stores and the hobby in general seems to be getting closer to less losses in the supply chain process, and moving more to aquaculture than taking from the wild. All good things.

if it has yet to go out the door you can see if they will add them. I had mine added to an order...
