Hooked on Tunze

Looks like I've been bitten by the Tunze bug.

I recently jumped back into reefing when a friend decided to get out. I bought a new 90g Oceanic Tech Tank and transferred the inhabitants (3 fish, 60lbs rock) from my friend's 65g. I set up a 20g Long tank as a sump with Mag 9.5 return pump. I also used an Aqua C Remora skimmer running on an MJ1200.

Things were going well so I added a couple of fish. A couple turned into 6 fish over a 4 week period and then all but 2 of my fish died within a few days. I never did figure out the problem, but I decided to let the tank sit for a while.

Around two months ago I purchased an Osmolator and used a 5g Home Depot bucket. I had to clean the sensor after the second day after it almost overflowed the sump.

Two weeks ago I added a 6060 after waiting for months for the nano streams. Then for Christmas I got a 9010 skimmer. Needless to say, I didn't get anything else for Christmas from the SO!

The first 48 hours were less than inspiring. The bubbles were barely above the top of the skimmer body. After reading this forum I gained some patience and waited. On the third day, things started happening. The bubbles were at the top of the collection cup and I had to cut back on the air. There was about half an inch tea-colored nog.

Two days later and my tank is getting obviously better. The water looks clearer, the film algae is receding, and my fish look healthier.

I am now a very satisified Tunze customer.

Oh, and pics are coming in the next post.

The only pic I got of all 3 of my fish (Excuse the glass, my scraper isn't long enough to reach the bottom :) )

I'm waiting for someone to comment on the Easter Island head in the middle ....

There was a large cluster of xenias on it, so I did the best I could to disguise it. I may end up cutting out the portion that has the xenias and glue it onto a regular rock.

mthird- I was trying to figure out what that was. Now that you say it i can see it. I thought it was shaped like something ive seen before.

I know, I subsist on mac n chesse(not even Kraft)so I can save up money to buy stuff. I live for the UPS truck pulling into my driveway to bring me another light blue box. I even keep the boxes and was reluctant to let my wife wrap one of our daughter's Xmas presents in it. I have swallowed the hook.

In my best "Homer" voice
mmmmmmm.........light blue boxes...........aaagggghhhaaawww
Nice set-up mthird!
BTW........check that digital Coralife thermometer. They are known to read at least a *few* degrees off. Check it with an accurate glass one to be sure. Mine was off about 3-4 degrees.
Later.......Herbie (also Bitten by the bug)

Hah You know I read your original post the other day and was like yes, someone else is now hooked on Tunze too! I didn't realize I knew you >< haha nice tank! How has your pygmy gotten along with the corals you have? I wanna get one *maybe* but i dont want it munching away on stuff

I think the pygmy has taken a liking to my new zoo's. I'm going to keep a close eye on things and I'll take him out if I can confirm it.

My LFS got 12 6045's in yesterday. Since I already bought a 6060, I only took 1. Hooked it up this morning, but haven't had a chance to play with it.

First impressions are:
* it is tiny compared to the 6xx0 series
* the included magnet isn't holding very well on my tech tank
* the cord definitely needs to be longer
* it's quiet :)
* the flow feels pretty strong; within 20% of the 6060
* rotating ball pumps are very cool

I'll get pictures posted up later.
