Hop's 300 gallon in-wall build

Tank looks awesome Hop. What reflectors are you running now? And what ballast are you running the 250 Radiums with?

Thanks! It seems empty to me:( The reflectors were seized from a illegal hydroponic grow. When the kind narcotics officers destroyed them in a trash can, I took them out... Two are 26" wide and the one is 20". they seem OK for free:lol: I'm using a PFO dual magnetic ballast to drive the radiums.

Job perks. Gotta love that!!! :D It's funny when you search halide ballasts what comes up on google. Hey, you might think your tank looks empty, have you looked at mine lately? It's literally empty!

Yeah i guess you can't argue. The order said they had to be thrown away... they never said after they threw them away someone couldn't grab them on the other side of the dumpster several hours later:D All the cords were cut, but new ones were cheap:D

I see room for a few frags. :)

yeah just a few:lol: I really am looking, but I don't want to introduce any right now. I think I'm just getting the tank dialed in. Tonight I went out and learned I'm out of salt:eek: I thought I had one or two buckets left... Had to buy a bucket and it wasn't on sale... Apparently salt has gone up since I ordered salt last year:rolleyes:

Well there have been some personal things that have pretty much kept me from doing anything more than doing water changes and keeping the skimmer cleaned out and the kalk reactor full. But at least this time it is a positive thing;)

But I was skimming back over some pictures and realized I've had some incredible growth from my acro, especially over the past few months.

It started like this in January of 2008 when I got it as a "frag":

Sometime around March 2009:

A pic from yesterday:

I'm still not sure if the change in color is a good thing, but over the past three months since I started dosing vodka, the color is of the tips is showing more of a tri-color appearance. Plus the change in lighting probably has a lot to do with it.

Otherwise, one of my steroid-abusing chromis began picking on a few of the anthias and one lept to his death a few weeks ago. I'm probably going to see about getting rid of two large chromis and restock some anthias in the future.

But the Mystery Clown Wrasse has become my favorite tank dweller. He has double in size since I got him and is now about 4". His color has really become intense and keeps the tank very active. Not the best picture, but here is one of his colors:

But like I mentioned things are on auto-pilot and hold for a few months. I want to get some things done around the house and will worry about the tank again later this summer or in the fall...

Completely unrelated picture of a sunset out the back door tonight:D

Sorry that you have been busy, but glad that the tank is going well on auto pilot, that has to make things easier.

Really like that sunset picture.

Thanks Todd! It's a great time for sunsets here, although we went from temps in the 50s during the day to high 80s overnight. eek!

I did want to post some nog shots of the MSX250. Extended neck and stock pinwheels. Here is about 5-6 days of goo... I really like this skimmer, but want to trade out one of the pumps for an Askoll, but that will have to wait until after summer;)

What are your current NO3 and PO4 levels? With vodka dosing, it is possible to get what looked like bleaching. You said tri-color, but that isn't what I saw in that last picture. How does it look to your eye?

Looks like your new skimmer is working out well. :)

Well according to my cheap test kits... no3 is less than 5ppm and po4 is 0. but my fuge had begun to grow some great hair algae again and the tank is getting the dreaded algae in a few spots as well in some of the rock that I didn't cook. The acro lost the brown color it had when I got it within the first month of having it. Subsequently I've never been convinced that it is a tri-color, although that what I paid for:D recently though, the ends of each have chenged to a lighter color and give it a bit of a more tri-colored look. The PE also seems better and the polyps are a bright green now?

The monti-caps colors have all intensified and their growth has increased as well. So I'm not sure what is going on. Figured I would try to monitor everything the best as I can:D

CRVZ and DrummerReef; Thanks... I like the skimmer. It seems to be doing pretty well as far as I can tell given the complications of my set up...

Why don't you add more snails to the tank to keep the algae at bay? Eric Borneman gave a talk recently about adding more cows to the field, so they can keep it mowed down nicely. ;)

Well I guess I have not updated this thread in nearly two months... I guess one reason is that I was told that build threads and how they carry over into life-blogs are boring. therefor I quit updating this thread so much. The next reason is that I needed a break... A break from the tank and I have just let it ride on auto pilot. No pictures, no worrying, just letting the tank be. I do a water change a month, empty the skimmer and occasionally do a little maintenance, but that is it. No more freaking out when something doesn't look right and spending hours and hours researching things. It was and still is just time for a good break:D

To make this a blog entry, I got a huge promotion at work and it is taking up the majority of my time. but I'm loving it. It's all in office now, but ultimately I know it is the right move. Someday soon I'm thinking that I need a cube in my new office:D

So in closing I will say that the tank is doing great! The SPS may not be thriving, but they are still growing. but the LPS, softies and zoa are going NUTS!

I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I hooked the closed loop back up with a panworld 50-pxx, but just got a sequence blackfin I'm going to give a whirl. I also replaced the two sicce pumps with an askoll (I won't put my input on the pump in here, but will say for $300 it was a huge disappointment).

At some point in the future I'll blow the dust off the camera and submit some pics of the tank.

Cheers!

Think you should dust off the camera now. ;)

And I never found this boring, but then again I am weird. ;)

But, congrats on the promotion, sure you more then deserved it. It must be nice to let the tank go on auto-pilot and have nothing major happen.

I've been preoccupied lately so doing some catching up on my favorite thread, I thought I was going to see a bunch of updates - but nothing

 Just need to get caught up on life;) I'm sure once the heat of summer dies down I'll have some motivation to hit the camera again...

I refuse to wait that long. I may have to drive up there and kick you in the knee.

Or you can start posting pictures now and avoid yourself the discomfort of my presence. :D

No pics, but I'm marking the day... I went into town to see what they had and was pleasantly surprised. I could have spent a few thousand dollars on livestock today... There were just so many to chose from. Corals looked great and most of the fish were better.

but instead I did add a few new colonies of zoa, a nice toadstool, a blue ric and some galexea... I also have some hitch hiker pulsing *****... But oh well.

I also picked up a mimic tang and a sailfin... Unfortunately the coral beauty doesn't like either... If I have to suck him out of the tank with the turkey baster he will behave:lol:
