Horrific Spill in Hawaii

This my favorite part:

Senior Vice President Vince Angoco told the Associated Press there was no response plan in place for a molasses leak but the company was not required to have one.

Seriously? No requirement for a spill response? I work in a lab where our largest container is under 25L and I'm required to have a spill response program. You're telling me that a company pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of liquid through pipeline in the ocean isn't required to have a spill response?!?!?! Is that a joke?

It's probably different for that sort of thing. Your spill repsonse plan is proably an OSHA requirement, whereas regulation of something like this is most likely under the EPA. THe EPA (and local organizations) must not have required it of them. It probably wasn't on the radar due to other things that seem more dangerous, like oil and industrial solvents and such. That will probably change soon. I would have never thought molasses would do that much harm.

So while CITES is targeting small hand collections of diverse species across all the reefs in Hawaii, nobody is looking at poor commercial practices that can take out entire ecosystems. Typical political BS.

I used to snorkel in Hawaii as a kid in the 70s. The water had so much more wildlife and corals. The last two times I went to Hawaii, I did not even see pufferfishes. It's just sad.

After I retired from the military, I live in central coast of California. My wife says it's better weather here. Now I don't have to see the ecosystem in Hawaii taking a downward swing. Just have to see the one in California though.

10 yrs ago in Kawai, the harbor after a hard rainfall smelled like cow manure and was brown for 3 days. Local advisory, don't go in the water for 2 days or so. Nice!

My first time to Hawaii in 98' and I remember there being tons of fish in Hanauma bay, the popular snorkel spot on Oahu, and I have been a few times since them and every time the fish population has gotten smaller and smaller. They used to let you bring puppy kibbles and frozen peas to feed them, and now not only can you not do that, then make you watch some stupid video before going down there. Either way, the fish are gone now. Whatever they did didnt work. Sad
