House or tank??? Time to sell the tank

After talking to a lot of you today I'm rethinking my approach. Realizing that not everyone can use both tank AND livestock, I am seriously considering selling in two groups.

I will put a list together of each group and how the price breaks down. An update will be posted tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone that contacted me to say "DON'T GO!!!". I plan on sticking around and getting back in the game soon. I am also considering keeping a few pieces of equipment since they are brand new (Luminarcs, RK2). I also have a brand new skimmer on its way that I've had AquaC custom design. It will stay in the box until my next tank or used for a frag tank to stay active in the hobby.

wow. i was going to call you yesterday because i was in your area just to see if you had a free minute to check it out and see how things have progressed over the past couple months. that green slimer frag that fell onto i think it was your riccordea that you gave me has just about healed up. its starting to encrust the base now. let me know if you have some free time sometime to check it out and shoot the breeze a little bit.

i have to say...seeing your tank has really been one of my biggest influences in getting into this moneypit

Last time I shut all my tanks down I did what many were suggesting and kept what at the time was high dollar stuff and sold off the small stuff and tanks. When I started up again it made it easier to start a tank but for the most part it really didn't save me much money. The equipment I saved was old school by the time I restarted and I had to buy new stuff anyway to satisfy my obsession and the old equipment no longer had any value. :lol:

Ken if you part out I have a friend looking for a 150 but he would only want the tank stand and canopy. He already has lights and pumps.

I'll let you know. There are a few people inquiring about buying all the livestock so that might be a possibility.

BTW, still waiting for that skimmer from AquaC, but that will be kept for a frag tank or until I'm ready again.

I have to agree with SteveU. I took my tanks down a year ago to remodel my house. Kept most of my stuff. Now, I am setting up my new tank, I need (want) all new stuff for the following reasons:

1. My new tank is much bigger than the previous one so the equipment I have saved was not sufficient to support it. I understand you prefer to eventually set-up an in-wall tank. I would only venture to guess that this would be much bigger than your current 150 gallon.

2. Moving is very stressful and exhausting whether across the country or across the street. I moved my stuff from the house to the garage. Not to mention a PODS storage. A year later, I still have stuff in boxes. You never know how much you have until you start packing.

3. Lastly, there will always be some other new reef equipment you would want to try by the time you are ready to set-up your new tank. Think how many times hobbyists on this board update their equipment. (Powerheads...Closed Loop...SCWD...OM...Tunze Streams...Vortech)

Just my opinion. Good luck on your purchase. Real estate seems to have slowed down. Inventory is up, days on the market is up, and prices are down. It probably is a good time to purchase.

Sorry to read you are out, but buying a house the smart move, and then you cn build in a 1000 gallon system!

Anyway, I'd be interested in all of your SPS corals, the smaller clams (not sure about the football, LOL!) as well as some of the LPS/softies (depends on what the LPS/softies are).

Shoot me a PM if you split the hardware from the corals and I'd be glad to come take a look.


I forgot what your metal halides are, but I could use some 400 watters if you have some.

Those interested in buying just the coral or just the tank/equip please send me a PM with your email address. I do not wish to post the whole list here since I'm not interested in selling piece by piece at this time.

Yeah, moving sucks.

A YEAR? I unpacked 99% of our stuff (and it was a lot) in two weeks. Mainly because I got tired of not being able to find stuff.:lol:

Yeah house hunting and dealing with loans is stressful enough. Moving is going to blow! Especially since I'm a horrible pack rat. For those of you that are real saddistic just watch over the next month as I completely unravel before your eyes :fun5:

Oh you're doomed. I am an anti-pack rat and moving still sucked. Interestingly enough, moving (tank and all) was the easiest part I think. Actually the tank increased the degree of diffculty by 10.

$8,000, yeah that should cover inspections, repairs, miscalculated closing costs, time off of work, and misc. stuff like window coverings and carpet shampooing.

I hated every minute of it too. In the end it was worth it. At least that's what I keep telling myself. :lol:

I hated moving so I decided to remodel. Now, I am not sure I made the right decision. And yes, all my contractors kept telling me that it would all be worth it in the end!

Ken, sorry to hear about you having to tear down your tank I have been down that road and it is aa tough decision to make when I bought my house 6 years ago I had to take down and sell my 90 gal reef but I kept some key pieces (wet/dry canister filter, protien skimmer, halide lights) I had a fish only setup within a year just to partially satisfy the itch. What you are doing is good though buying a house is a good thing you can never go wrong with owning property where are you looking? There are a couple of houses in my area on the market they are older homes with big pieces of property and in some cases have 2 houses on 1 lot. I am sure that after you get into your house and start up another tank many members of this board will volunteer to donate some frags to you I know I would.

John, I may keep a couple tiny frags of my prize or collectible pieces of coral and setup a nano tank. I'll certainly be back as I'm already dreading the idea of not having a tank.

For those who wanted to see what the tank itself looks like, here it is. This picture is before I installed the new Luminarcs and shows the hinged hood in the open position.

I've also decided to offer up all the corals as one batch and the tank/equipment as another. Several are interested in buying all the coral so if you are interested in either please PM me your email address. The list is in a spreadsheet that cannot be attched to PM's. Also note that I AM NOT PARTING OUT CORALS at this time. Not trying to be rude about it but I just don't have the time to spend selling individual pieces. Only after the livestock is sold will the tank and parts be sold. I might consider parting out equipment but I'm not taking any "dibs" so please hold off for now.

All the coral and clams are pending. The tank and equipment will go next. I will post a list shortly. Priority will be given to whomever wants to take the largest portion of equipment (i.e. tank, lights, and pumps).
