How aggressive does Sohal Tang gets?

Jup, they would try and chase you away by slapping their tail against your legs :thumbdown

Does any of the natives eat this fish?

I've personally never owned a Sohal, but most Surgeonfish from the genus Acanthurus are pretty aggressive.

My A. Pyroferus, was hyper-dominant and pretty much harassed every new addition to my tank. Became very territorial and even slashed my arm a couple times, while moving rocks. Claimed every spot as its algae patch and every fish stressed out, stopped eating, starved or ended up with ich! Cold blooded Killer

GL!

I love the way Blue Zoo describes their temperament; passed on to me by another member:
"Wide berth should be given to this Red Sea inhabitant as it’s aggression extends from the tangs to Parrotfishes, Triggerfishes and whatever else it may feel particularly displeased with."

Yes, that's a lovely turn of phrase. If Sohals are that aggressive in large public aquaria shouldn't the "Tank Sizes for Tangs" sticky be updated to state that Sohal tangs are not suitable for home aquariums (i.e., no recommended minimum size)? There's a footnoted disclaimer about exceptional aggressiveness, but I don't see how "careful planning" will alleviate the problem of this species' extreme aggression.

I've heard rumors that the tail spine might be mildly venemous, also.
Clearly, *NOT* a community fish!

They will *ATTACK* divers!?! That bad. I always though t it was Clown tangs that were the most aggressive tangs. That's almost scary..

Matthew

Underwater the most aggressive fish I have run into is a Titan Trigger fish. But I won't dive with fish that chase me any longer. :fish2:

You can find him on this page (before the mods locked the thread? why i dunno?)

If you truly do not know why the thread was locked, ask BrianD. He explained it when he locked it, but perhaps you may need clarification. And pointing back at that thread is probably not the greatest idea since it was locked.

Don't hate the player, hate the game!!! Many years ago reefers said that SPS corals could not be raised in the tank enviroment, look at where we are at now.

I want to point out that there is a great difference between something being impossible to keep because it is difficult to keep alive versus something that is too hard to keep because it gets enormous and very aggressive. You can't compare the two like this.

Steve is not a google god by ANY means, but he can respond for himself.

Sanchoy, start more drama in this or any other thread, and you are done on Reef Central.

Exactly.

Behavioral and ethical issues aside, I don't understand why anyone would want a fish that's going to make their 150, 250, or 400g + tank look small.

Thank you everyone for all your inputs! Decided not include the Sohal in the stocking list for my new tank. Planning to stock with Rare fishes and don't want to take the risk.

my 4" sohal tang (now 6") killed my expensive 3" fairy wrasse. and it killed my 5" blue face angelfish. it also killed my 3" bellus female angelfish. From earliest to latest in that order. So I put the killer in his own 22 gallon wide tank where he can only murder one emerald crab if he tries. He is free to murder the hair algae growing in there also.

And one more thing, the fishes that the sohal tang killed isn't cheaper!!!! I'm super ****ed off at that Sohal Tang. :angryfire:
