how big do BTA's usually get?

just as stated above my RBTA is getting huge it seems and im always thinking its going to split but it doesnt. i dont see a second mouth forming or anything....

currently its about 12-14" oval length wise and about 6-7" wide

They get in excess of 18" wide. Sometimes they'll split when they are small, and sometimes they will grow huge without splitting. Some people have had success getting them to split by feeding heavily for a few weeks, then doing a big (~50-75%) water change. This stresses them out and can cause them to split.

i'm a little confused by these dimensions, could you post a pic??


6" - 7" is average sized, i would say they grow to ~12" in diameter plus or minus a couple of inches. you won't see a new mouth start ( though it has happened ), they usually just split right down the middle with half the mouth going with one and the rest with the other.

oh wow they split right down the middle hummm ugh oh.... this is a old picture now about 2months old.... now during middle of the day it just about touches my frogspawn but by the circle you can see the mouth position....

its not always an even split ( some time 3 or more ) and there is always exceptions from the norm but generally speaking the usually do split down the middle.

they can either split from poor conditions ( survival instinct ) or just from so much growth and happiness, mine have for the most part grown to ~12" in diameter then split into two. though i do have a 12"+ right now that seams perfectly happy staying whole.

check my gallery and look at the rose. it was a monster. currently i have a bright green with pink tips that i would say is easily 18" around if not bigger.
