How can you tell if an Echinophyllia is happy?

Sorry, there's no punchline..it's a legitimate question.

I got a chalice from my LFS about a month ago, placed it low in the tank where it got mod to low light but moderate flow.
Never seemed to thrive, so I moved it slightly lower in the tank where it is more sheltered from current.
I may be seeing things but I swear the surface has thrown up many more spikey projections in the 48 hours since I moved it.
So I ask you, do the projections mean it's more or less happy?

It sounds like the "spiky" projections you're talking about is the skelton. If they start to poke through the tissue, thats bad.

When its happy the tissue looks fluffy, pillow like.
