How come my dorso pipe still gurgles?

I just setup my 75gal with a 1.25 inch dorso return. I am using a Eheim 1260, 620gph, return pump. My return PVC goes into the water of my sump. I know that the top cap needs the right amout of holes. However, I still get the gurgling sounds. Is it because back pressure builds up from the PVC being submerged in my sump? Thanks for any help!

the top cap should have one very small hole, if it is too large you will get the gurgle effect....

I'm having the same problem with mine. I put a 1/8 hole in mine but still making lots of noise. I think I'm going to put a cap on my 1" pvc going into my sump and the drill holes all around it. I gotta fix this noise it is driving me crazy

When making a hole start off with a 1/16 hole and so on.

i would put a airline valve on the top and attach some glue around it and adjust the air input until it is silent..

exactly, you want a tiny hole-the less flow the smaller the hole. If you make too big a hole it is like running the duso with no cap at all

the majority of my noise is where the water enters the sump. it sounds like lots of air running through it. could it be that I don't have enough back pressure?

this is where most of the noise is coming from 1" pvc going straight down to about a 1/2" from the bottom you can see all the bubbles.

Is it splashing noise of the water entering the sump, or noise inside the PVC itself?

Noise inside the pipes will generally be reduced a bit as the pipes age and get slime in them. Usually the best way to reduce drain pipe noise is to increase the pipe diameter.

I've also heard that installing your drain at an angle (not totally straight down) would assist in the water rolling down the pipe rather than falling straight through. Not sure if its true, but my drain is after my durso is slightly angled, but it was angled out of convenience, and the silence is a freebie.

Like others have said its all about the hole in the top cap....I also had a really hard time getting the hole size right...

So I thought Id try to drill the hole with a tapered sanding pyramid step bit and now my durso runs perfect! I dont know what it is with using the step bit maybe ists more precise or the air turbulence is funneled better or something but it works perfect...
