Just got a new crocea clam and i dont know how to attach it. I know they use bissel threads to attach, but it keeps falling over off of it's rock. i have the rock and clam down in the sand bed for attaching, but it just wont work.

any tricks?
how long does it take?

Well they like the sand bed nesxt to some LR with good medium flow. THey do have a foot that will support them but i takes some time. I just placed mine about 3 inches in the SB next to a rock and he stayed but does move a little.

Just keep righting it, maybe lean it against something and it will attach soon enough. You can lean it against a rock on the rock if you think it will help. I have attached a few clams this way. IMO it is better to have them attached to a rock then the bottom of the tank so you can move them more easily.

Just keep at it and try to find a place that you like where it seems stable. It can take anyhere from a few hours to a few weeks, but a healthy clam should attach within a couple days. Putting them on the sandbed can work but T. crocea is always found on hard substrates in nature so I like to put them up in the rockwork. They're also one of the more lightloving clams so closer to the light source is often better.

I have read several articles and books about clams and the experts say that crocea never are found in a sand bed in the wild and to attach them to a rock, so I agree with you.

This morning I woke up and he fell over again, so i went to pick him up and he was attached by a couple byssal threads. they came off pretty easy. Did I just tear his byssal organ? Is the clam going to be ok?

Croceas are always found up on the rocks but for now place a small flat rock about an inch or so under the sand and then place the clam over the rock and nudge it into the sand and push some sand up around the shell to keep it from tipping. in a few weeks check to see if its attached and if it is slowly move it up into the rocks where you want it

that is an excellent idea. so simple, why didnt i think of it? thank you for spelling it out for me, sometimes we get a one-track mind and just forget to stand back and evaluate the situation.

so did i hurt the clam by disconnecting the byssal threads this morning from the tank bottom?
