How do I blend the color of woods together?

post this in the DIY section but I didn't get any response.

I didn't realise how uneven it look until I brought the stand/tank in the house and took this picture. Notice the left door compare to the rest of t he doors?

What's the easiest way to make things blend together? Notice the left door compare to the rest of t he doors?

I would also like to put a coat of gloss over the stain to make things nice and shiny. Can I just brush the gloss over or do I have to sand it down first?

If that's only stain on the cabinet, just re-stain until you get it even.

If that already has a finish on it, you can use some universal pigments in some clear finish to go over the top. Scuff with 220 first. Then finish off with a clear coat.

Take the door off and go to the hardware store, someone might be able to tell you what it is.

That's an idea.

Good luck. Matching off stains is an art, for a quilified artist and no easy task. If you sanded it down and added a darker stain, you could probably get them close. Depends how sensitive to color you are. I think the middle door is the most off from your pic, but that is my eyes.

Don't worry, after awhile salt stains and water damage all look the same. :-)

I like the 'take the doors to a hardware store idea'. You probably want one where people are actually available to help you. Of the big chains, OSH is pretty good.

Best of luck,

Roy

That's must be true because I don't see anything different  :D

If it matters that much I suggest stripping it and restaining to get what you really want.......pick up the stuff on Friday and take your time, by Monday evening (or sooner) you could have water in the tank with a new to you stand with color of your preference.

Matching stains is a pain, they vary as much as Metal Halide bulbs do....bulb to bulb and by manufacturer to manufacturer. Not only that, but most of the sample woods, or even worse sample pictures, that they are stained on are not the same as yours......when you get it done, it looks totaly different......

If it matters a lot, take a door off and get some sample cans, Minwax? used to have them and gave them out for free at lumberyards, strip and stain a couple of patches to figure out what you like the best.

Tinted varnish(glaze) is the fast way.

Stripped and refinished is the nicest way.

Here's some info on glazing:

I've refinished tons of woodwork that way. If you practice, it's easy enough to get even colors, and you can do texturing and graining too.

I've repaired antique cabinets that were damaged by laboratory chemical leaks. I did faux wood grain in the glaze that people couldn't tell apart from the original undamaged finish.

Guys, I just spent 6 hrs on my plumbing and probably another few hrs to get it done. stripping and re-staining for me is just out of the question. Here's a better picture with less of the flash to make the light pop. It's closer to the lightings in that room.

Might look kind of cool if you paint just the inset door panels black and leave the frames and and the rest of the woodwork stained.

But it really looks like you just need some black glaze faux graining on the center door.

I think the tank and stand are to small, you should scrap the whole thing and buy a bigger tank :)

Or sell it to you right?
