i want to breed clownfish so i need to culture rotifers. i need to know everything to get me started. where can i get a good starter culture? i need to know where you get all your supplies for the culture and everything! thanks in advance!

Florida Aqua Farms is a good source for supplies, as well the "Plankton Culture Manual" which is the best book going for anyone looking to raise their own cultures.

cool so everything i need is in that maxi culture kit? what lights do i need for them? and what size tank should i use?

www.seahorsesource.com get the nanno algae paste to feed them, the t. iso paste to enrich them and a seive to collect them. You can also buy the rots from there all for about 50 bucks. when you get them split the culture into three or so glass containers and add some 1.017 salinity clean salt water, not tank water, feed at least twice a day and be sure to harvest even if you arent feeding out. Add a little amquel + to keep ammonia in check. You must clean at least every other day bc you will notice the crud at the bottom. to do this I take out the airline in the jar, forgot to mention that, and let contents settle then pour the clean rots on top into a clean bowl. do this until you get as much as you can out and dump the rest. clean the glass container add a little fresh salt water and replace rots. this method has worked for me forever. hth

you need to culture in something like half gallon glass jars. glass seems to work better than plastic. you need to have multiple cultures to that you can rotate which one you use and let them builld back their populations in between. also you should have multiple cultures so that if one crashes you can restart.

You should really use something smaller that is easier to clean. You should use those tanks to start some pod cultures :) That way you wont spend your life trying to syphen them clean. I harvest from one a day. the night before i will feed the enrichment and i will replace with clean saltwater whenever i feed out. then when the day is done and i have fed from that culture three times that day, i give it until aprox 36-48 hours to regenerate. I am not supporting a ton of fry right now so the three half gallon glass containers suffice. If you need a whole lot of rots then the 5 gallon tanks would suffice but imo, its too big for a home hobbiest. You would also need to give the rots a week or so to fill up that amount of water before you harvest.

The 5 gallon tanks aren't hard to clean, IME. Nice big open tops makes siphoning rather easy, and siphoning is one of those tasks that any budding aquaculturist needs to master ;) Also clownfish are rather prolific spawners and raising their larvae will require large rot cultures. Start one culture first, when that gets to a good working density, harvest some and start the second culture. With both cultures up and running full steam, you can harvest half the culture every other day by alternating which cultures you pull from. Siphon the bottoms of debris as needed, your looking for reasonably clean but not sparkling clean. Rot's seem to do better in slightly dirty tanks than in sterile set ups. Using only live phyto, I can keep a culture going 4-8 weeks without needing to restart. Use of dead feeds like Instant Algae are a bit trickier and need cleaning more often. Monitor the health of rotifers using a strong magnifying glass. When you see an upswing in the proportion of males, it's time to use that 3rd tank and start a new culture using about 1/4 -1/3 of the water/rots from the old culture. Now is the time that you really clean that old culture tank and place it in reserve for restarting the next one ;)

Well put billsreef. I am an algae paste user so you are right, I have to keep them a bit cleaner. I envy your live phyto. I haven't the space or the time for that too. haha. I have only used my rots for seahorse fry and haven't ever needed more that gallon containers to satistfy my fry since they only eat the rots for about the first two weeks. But we are coming up on breeding season sooo, i may be using five gallon tanks soon as well! I agree that syphening is a valuable skill in this hobby for sure! I have found that a squeegee of some sort to scrape the gunk up first is wonderful. Even an old credit card, one thats been paid off you know haha, will work. Good luck with all your fries guys!

Old credit cards are indeed good tools :D Just finished scraping coralline with one

Live phyto doesn't really take much more time, but it does require a bit of space and another set of lights to suck down electricity. But I can be in a rush and overdose phyto and not have the problems I'd have if I put in too much algae paste.
