I have two 1.5" bulkheads for my closed loop that is leaking. Can I use silicon and run it around the lock nut to seal it?

You can, but you'll need to get it into the threads as well (silicone both outer rim, and inner threaded portion).

Are we talking slip or threaded BTW?

If don't plan to remove it use epoxy glue to seal. I have one that had a small leak and it did the trick.

If you are having a hard time getting them to hold just remove the gasket from inside the tank and put a bead of silicone in its place then retighten the bulkhead.. Just snug it not too tight .. IF you overtighten it all of the sillicone will be squeezed out.. Let it cure per the instructions on teh silicone tube.. Once its cured you can give it an extra eighth of a turn but its usually not necessary.. I would fill it back up with water to test.. IF it doesn't leak don't tighten anymore.. If it does leak give it an eighth of a turn.. If it sitll leaks take it apart and start all over again...

If the tank is already stocked and emptying is not an option I've used both marinetex and 5200 to stop leaks...

I used silcone to fix ALL of my leaky bulkheads. (That's what I get for buying cheap bulkheads.) Just make sure that the silcon isn't "antibacterial."

Speaking of bulkheads - what are the best type of bulkhead you can get and where do you buy them? I have an AGA 120G.

I'll seen some 2in SCH40 for about $60 guessing from the price those maybe the best or a rip off:D

How about the "second" best bulkhead.

I used AGA Aquarium Silicon. I put about half a tube onto the inside/outside of both bulkheads. All is peachy now. :D
