HOw do I frag my zoo's. Some of them are taking over

Can anyone tell me how to safely frag zoanthids?
any advise is welcomed and thank you in advance.

try pulling the mat off of the rock, or break the rock

.. CREDIT CARD IT!!... use one of the creditcards you maxed out and gently scrape them off.. its easy.. was able to do it in strong waves at the boca inlet in south florida free zoos

reefmaint... I was on a business trip in Florida and went down to the Boca inlet to look for zoos... We hit the park side and the private side and walked the rocks on the channel edges... Didn't see a thing.

Anniesreef- I've used a razor blade to take off individual polyps to frag or entire sheets.

yeah.. u missed them uhhh.. wow.. how can you miss the zoos on the boca inlet. >< go to the eye doctor and please please please have some one else drive .. at low tide the zoos are actualy out of the water

Zoofraggen 101

These zoos have become popular and I'm down to only 2 frags, so, time to bust out another fragging session. I took a few fotos while doing it so you can see

how easy it is. I use regular old clam shells that came from a craft store for mounting the frags, these seem to work well. I drill a hole in the top so no

air bubble forms under the shells, this also makes it easy to move the frags with tweezers.


Start by getting all the things you need, not pictured are the latex gloves I wear while doing this stuff.

I drill a hole in the top of the shells so no air accumilates underneath.

I start with the mother colony in a shallow tub with some tank water.

also got to get some of that damn algae off

I use the trusty swiss army knife (small blade) to pry the zoos off.

Cut the mat around the edge to seperate the frag out, don't pull them off or you'll tear a polyp or two.

I use the knife to take some of the rock off with the zoos, much easier to attach the frags this way.

The mother goes back into the tank and the frag mounting begins. Remove fraglets from the tub...

Dry off the base of the fraglet on a towel, have the shell ready to go.

a small amount of rock remains under the mat, apply a blob of super glue gel.

Apply some glue.

Attach the fraglet to the shell and hold for a few seconds.

Gloves save you from getting zoo frags attached to the ends of your fingers

apply some more glue around the edges to ensure a firm grip.

Let it sit for a minute while the glue sets.

While that one is setting, make another

make a whole bunch, I aim for 8 - 10 polyps per frag.

Put them back into the tub while I do some more.

All done and ready to go back into the tank.

13 frags in this session.


Back into the tank just a few minutes, not open yet.

Mother colony looks happy again.

Next day all the frags are looking happy. don't just sit there, start growing !!

I did a Google seach for this helpful info which I guess I'm lucky enough to have a print out of with pictures.

Some of the zoos I have you can't cut. When closed they are like a mosquito bite. I have to actually chissel the rock.

Propagating the paly's whith the clowning procedure: cut a member out ,put on to a plate then whith a blade cut to equal 4-5 piece.put in a transparent box on to a holder rock ,cover 90% with a glas immersed to the aquarium bottom,under normal ligting it's begin to form balls to at 1-2 weeks ,another 1-2 weeks will form the ½heads½.In 3 mounts ,if are feeding regularly will grow to 5-8 mm head diameter .

not to be picky but isn't that poaching and illegal..?

I was thinking the same thing about those two.:wildone:
It is poaching and harvesting coral in the Carribean (US waters) has been illegal for a long time now.

They're not smart talking about harvesting corals in Fla on a public forum where biologists and other students browse.

fyi enviromentalists hate poachers.

I belave most any thing that is not reef building you can take with a fla. fishing license so zoas ,rics and softies are legal I think but think is the big word
