How do I silence a Venturi??

Setup my skimmer today and the dan things is howling at the moon! Terrible gargling noise that I know wont let us sleep tonight. ANy tricks of the trade?

You can try putting some loose cotton in the air line tube. That will help muffle the noise. The only thing is if you restrict the air flow, it will reduce the performance of the skimmer.

Tswifty8 has the idea. Tswifty8, you don't get any noise??? I like your method better because there is no air restriction with the cotton.

Tswifty8, I just noticed your using a tank for your sump. Did you have it drilled on the side for the return pump? If so who did t and how much$ ?

I'm looking to do the same with a 45G that I have sitting in my office as a quarantine.

That's not my tank. I couldn't find my picture at the time (that picture was posted by RC member Xenon).

My current skimmer has one that came pre-manufactured on it. Same design, and it works great... you can't hear the skimmer when you stand right in front of my stand.

No I don't drill sumps, unless you're using an external pump.

Just an extra place for somethign to leak. I drop my drain lines right into the sump.

Here's one of my smaller sumps I use under my 30g QT tank.

Drill a hole in the end of a 35mm film canister so the airline fits snugly, drill some more holes in the cap for air to pass through, stuff some cotton balls inside so it is only loosely filled and stick the cap on.

OK,
I tried Rats 35mm film can. It did work.
It made my vent significantly quiter.
When I put my vent hose into the can
(before adding the cotton), it sounded
like one of these kids with a fart can
muffler on a Honda, LOL.

Found a better way not having to use the cotton. Just drill another hole on the other side of the canister and put a 4" piece of tubing on the other side all the way in. So basically both lines are parallel to each other and not touching at the ends per say. Don't know why it works but it does and there is no air restriction as with the cotton.

This worked incredibly well, so easy to make! Measure your tubing diameter and find a drill that size. Then drill a hole in the center of the cap, another hole off center in the film canister bottom. Cut off 3-4" of the tubing and pass it thru the cap an inch or so. Put the cap on the canister and pass the venturi line into the canister base an inch or so. And you have a venturi muffler with NO air restriction! Quiet, Quiet, Quiet !

Hardest part was finding a film canister!
