How do you afford this?

You damn sure don't tell your wife how much or what has been spent already on the little bit of ocean reef; this way you can keep spending!

i don't im broke living the American dream.... lol well for me i got rid of my corvette then had kids no vet :( gotta have something for me so i spend my extra cash on the tank....
don't get rid of the vette just don't eat more than twice a day .you will be skinny and have a vette. hehehe just kidding

Yeah, I learned a LONG time ago not to charge anything in this hobby.

As Randy Moss would say..."Straight cash homie".

Going into debt on a house, car or business is one thing. Going into debt because of a reef tank? No way!!!!

Priorities, or a lack there of....

Bingo, who needs to eat when I can have the latest LE coral?

Crackers and honey is all I need

I'm a diesel mechanic.:D
I made a lot of my equipment. Check my thread.
Kids have been out of the house and off the payroll for a few years.

Lol, uhm...afford it?
Well...folks have already said: lack of organized priorities, not going out on the town...for anything else, not having children, not telling significant other exactly how much you spent, doing without any other hobby, not buying anything new, trading, etc.

This is the only thing I do other than teach. I have a cat, snake, and 'pet' mice. Overall they cost me...20$ a month?
I'm trying to buy things my gf likes and do things she likes so I can gloss over costs of what it'll take to maintain the things she likes/my stuff.

Seems all the boards have a questionairre now about how reefers still 'afford' the hobby with recession in the air....

Budget, spend only cash, don't use credit.

Given enough time, its doable.

Btw the above spending control is a good idea for your whole life. Credit is the spawn of the devil.... avoid it like the plague. If you can't outright buy it, you don't need it.... Heathcare being the one exception.

Agreed 100%....I pay cash for everything. Except for my house. If I cant pay cash, I dont need it. As far generating extra cash, I do side jobs. If you have a trade you are good at and is needed then you can always make a quick buck!!

I now have everything bought and setup, and if I change equipment I use the money from my old dry goods. Also find good deals, like 2 Tunze 7095 controllers adn 4 6100's for the great low price of 300.00......Yes 300 american dollars.

I DIY everything I can, and pay cash only... never on credit. that cash is picked up from frags & drilling tanks or other diy. I saved a fortune doing it myself! the monthly bill is about 150 to 170$ to keep everything in its optimum state ( bulb replacement schedule, food, additives, hydro etc ) this doesn't include the purchases of corals etc.

I think the trick is cash only and I only buy/trade frags, I actually enjoy them way more then a full colony. I just love to see that 1" frag get the size of a basketball.

Get a significant other who loves the hobby as much as you do... that way they chip in 1/2 the $$

if you do tell your wife how much you spend, sell her by using the same tactics women have been using for years. "it was on sale today" or "see how much money I saved on this deal!"
