How do you clean your hands...

Use antibacterial soap, follow hand-washing technique, rinse really well, keep hands higher than elbows (to avoid water dripping down to clean area), dry with sterile hand towels.

This is what I do before surgery on humans, I am certain it is enough for a tank.

fixed that for ya ;)

I'm a fan of the soap free rub and rinse when it comes to the aquarium.

i use tap water and this metallic thingy that i bought from a dollar store that removes smells. mostly because i often have lotion on my hands or they have fragrances from soaps so i figured this metal thingy would remove them. its supposed to remove fish and garlic smells off your hands.

I avoid perfumed soaps, use a pump variety, and just rinse, rinse, rinse, AND, most important, I use latex exam gloves (supermarket pharmacy) to protect my corals and inverts from the roughness of MY fingers.

What sort of device is this?

I just rinse with tap water, and pat dry with a towel (if I remember to) but I don't have to worry too much since my tap water does not have chlorine/ any other chemicals to treat it.

I almost always avoid soaps prior to putting my hands in the tank. I just rinse with tap water and pat dry with a clean towel.

its most likely stainless steel. if you rub your hands on a stainless steel scrub pad it does the same.

i dont know if this is bad but i use distilled vinegar and then rinse with tap water. mainly to get rid of the gojo soap residue from the welding shop.

Soap and rinse if I'm concerned with lotion or something on my hands. Just rinse if they're 'clean'. I also keep a box of equine ob sleeves near the tank - quick, cheap, disposable and shoulder length!

I just rinse my hands real good in the tank water. Once or twice a month I bring a washcloth and some soap and make a bath out of it. Wash my hair every other time. Usually do a little tank cleaning while I'm at it. Tooth brush makes a good multi-use tool while brushing teeth/cleaning skimmer, etc.

Widmer, by the looks of your avatar, you wear full laboratory scrubs when reaching into your tank.

The argument against antibacterial soap is a good one, I never thought about that. Would there be enough residue on your hands to cause an issue?

I also dose rifampicin as seen in the picture. It really brings out the red in the RBTAs.

As far as having enough residue on the hands to cause an issue, I guess I'm not aware of any data that supports me on it.
