How do you keep 50 diff kinds if sps together?

Buy a bigger tank. lol. Not sure what you mean though. I assume you mean how do you keep them from touching and killing one another. I place mine at least 2-3" apart from one another to keep them from growing into each other. If they grow too close to where they are about to touch I usually frag the less desirable one on the tip that is about to touch and leave the more desireable one alone.

With constant trimmings. I just hit my 50th acro in my 40 breeder. 30th monti some time ago. Every time something gets too big frag it keep a frag and sell the rest.

I am a small polyp hoarder. If i can just get one more polyp in there i think i'll be okay....just ....one more...

^ wow I also have a 40 breeder. Thats a lot of sps, pics please. I would like to see how you get them all in there. I will need to start gluing frags to the sides and back of my rock soon to more in there.

Here is a top down from May-ish. The larger colonies have been reduced to make room and the sand bed now has a frag rack hovering over it. It's not pretty just my suitcase of genetics while I move place to place.

the first picture is the second island (closes to the overflow) and the second picture is the first island. the lower shelf had at least 10 different kinds of SPS and the upper shelf has at least 15 different kinds of SPS.

One thing I like to do is place my acros 6" apart and fill in space in between with encrusting montis. This works great because when the montis meet the acros the acros always win the fight and just slowly push back the montis.

This is not my experience (at least with sunset monti and hologram monti). While the montis lose at first, eventually they build up enough and physically begin to envelop the acro :( I'm sort of regretting adding my encrusting montis.

I have about 30-35 mounted onto rocks and growing.

Then I have 65-70 either on one of two frag racks or sitting in the sand.

I'm building a frag tank now, just so I can have my display back.

Ya I tried cyphastrea and what a bad idea it over runs everything in it's path acros to montie I used two types the pink/blue and green/blue.

I see a lot space for more SPS. Keep hoarding hoarder. :)

My experence is with pokerstar, reverse sunset, superman, reverse superman, rainbow. My sunset hasn't meet up with any acros yet but will soon meet my ORA tricolor. What acros did your montis take over? And were they colonys or frags?
Thanks

Has anyone used cyphastrea for this? A friend of mine said that it will not encrust over acro.

I have about 8 different cyphastreas but they are all in the shade. It would only work for the deepwater stuff. At least in my tank.

I need to get an up to date pic. That space you see is no more. BTW speaking of hoarding, does anyone watch the new episodes of South Park? LOL Maybe I hoard frags because I am blocking some terrible memory. :hmm5:

Some larger pieces, some frags. Nothing with names. ID's would be tough. So far, guessing, austera, turaki, unknow stag, insignis.

So your montis just stop growing on that front? An imaginary line is drawn, and the monti just doesn't grow beyond it? How large are the acros?

Perhaps I am just unlucky with my monti choices. I definitely know some other locals that had the same issue with the sunset. Not sure about the hologram though. I know caps were great...they always lost to acros :)

They'll end up touching eventually! You'll end up trimming and fragging for the sake of the corals.

I have let some of my colonies fight it out; one of my Mille's branches has encrusted onto a branch of my Stag. It looks pretty neat.

No not a invisable line lol the acro and montis do there little chemical war at night with the little white filaments and in the morning part of the monti will be dead back about 1/4 in from where it meet the acro. Then it will grow back and repeat.

Your montis took over the acros intirely? Was it gradual or the result of a chemical war all at once?

Also sorry for the thread hijack.

No, very very gradual, and only a bit on some acros. BUT... it is clear that they are slowly losing, even though at first I saw the same thing you did...wake up one morning to find the monti pure white 1/4" down the edge. It's as if the monti built up itself in response to the initial attack.

I too apologize for the hijack :o
