How do you kill Hairy Mushrooms

A long time ago I made the mistake of adding green metallic hairy mushrooms into my mixed reef. Years later they are spreading like crazy... and unfortunately they have found a way to sneak into Crevasses and places where it's impossible to remove the rocks they are on.

How do I kill them..? :mad2:

Any ideas would be appreciated

Too bad you have to kill an animal like that. I imagine kalk would do the trick. What about inviting a few friends over who would want them and scrape them off the rock?!?

no way - i wouldnt want anyones hands in my tanks. knock a rock over. there is always in nature and in our tanks "animals" that over grow and kill each other off. i wouldnt want my 1 dollar mushrooms overtaking my 100 sps coral when they spew there guts all over it.

Only your hands go in the tank and scrape the mushies off. Wasn't suggesting 16 hands in the tank, just another way other than killing something our wild reefs are lacking.

Yes, they ARE animals or don't you know what corals are in fact?!? The only non-living item in your tank would be the electronic devices.

Next time, don't put mushies in your sps tank.

I am running three tanks on one sump. Each has it's own species in it.

yea iam sure he is the only one to ever make a mistake in this hobby. peoples taste change over time as well.
i agree josh - its funny that its always someone not in the area that has something negative to say. if he only knew matt and the lengths he goes threw to keep his tank.

Matt, I'm going thru the same problem. Jason, I curse you for ever giving me those things, LOL. My game plan is hacking at the base and cutting them loose and getting out as much of the cut shroom as I can. Then I'm using kalk paste on the left over base.

I've only done this to one of about five so far, and that was over a week ago. I plan on waiting about a week in between each shroom. That way it shouldn't reek havoc on my system.

By the way, to those of you that think they are cool. They spread like wildfire and pack a heck of a sting. I've lost candy cane and a yuma to these damn things.....

Months ago I scraped them off the rockwork with a razor knife... I thought I got 'em all but unfortunately they came back. Oddly, much smaller this time and they don't seem to grow any bigger. But they do reproduce and move quite a bit.

I may try using a syringe filled with lime juice and kalk mix... A Kevorkian cocktail...

Yeah, I had a feeling scraping would not be enough alone. That's why I'm doing the follow up with kalk to insure these things don't come back.



And by the way that other post has got WAY out of hand. I can't believe some people. You'd think you were killing kittens or something, lol.

The acid from the lime citrus (H+) and the OH- from the Kalk will most likely just react and negate eachother... It will make H2O (water) and a Calcium salt with whatever acid donated the H+ from the citrus...

I would stick to a concentrated dose of one or the other. Its sort of like mixing baking soda and vinegar for a science fair volcano.

hey this might be a stuid idea have you thought of putting a rock over the that has nothing on it and snuffing them out? they also possible might move to the rock that you put on it to try to search for light. if you use the razor blade and you cut it at the base the basr possibly will grow back. i dont see why kalk would not work in a very pasty form. george has done this with green star polyps the second most hated weed after xenia. good luck and let us know how it works out

I just tried using a syringe filled with my alk part of my 2-part chemicals. I injected it into the the center of the shroom going all the way to the rock. It looked like it was melting it away. I'll let you know when the lights come on this morning.

I hate to bring a difference, but Lime is actually VERY alkaline and not acidic, as it is named for limestone, which is a strong base....hence you do not have citric acid from Lime, you have Calcium Hydroxide, which carries a pH of 12.0 to 12.5.

The naming confusion is very common, but the Lime we refer to is fundamentally the same stuff used to stripe a sports field, or put on a dead, decaying critter to rush its breakdown, thus reducing the stank factor, in case it's too much a mess to get rid of....

Mitch... they are talking about using lime juice, as in from a lime fruit that grows on a tree. It is indeed acidic!

Yep, from what I gathered Matt was talking about Lime the fruit... Perhaps I was wrong, but i have heard of people using lemon juice in the past..

Tonight I did the same thing. I was fortunately able to reach almost all the little buggers and I shot each with a generous dose of Ocean's Blend part Alk into the center. I'll have to keep and eye on them and repeat this a few times until they finally disappear. For the time being though they look pretty much wounded... and near death :hmm5:
