How do you use Phosban?

Just installed my new Phosban reactor.

All kinds of questions.

1. I put in 100 grams of phosban. I put it at around 53 GPH which is the ratio it states for that amount. It is kind of boiling at the top surface of the phosban and the water above is a little brown. I thought this was not right so I turned it down to about 30 GPH and it is barely tumbling at top. I mean barely. Which is right?

2. I installed it with a Maxi 600. I cannot get the pump to work without having to suck the air out till it gets through the reactor. Then it will start pumping. Is this normal? Kind of like it needs primed.

3. Can I mix carbon in there with it? And how? Just mix it all up or layer it?

Yes, I threw away the first gallon or so of water till it ran clear. But it still seems a little brownish above the mediam.

FOr what its worth, I used Kent Marine's phosphate sponge as directed, and after one day, my green star polyps pulled in and would not come out. After I pulled the phosphate sponge out, the green star polyps returned after another day and have been fine. I can't figure out what the kent marine stuff is, aluminum or ferrious based. THe label just says, "ceramic medium" or something like that.

Radicaljbr,

As long as the water coming out of the tube is clear, you are ok.

The medium should be just barely "boiling" in the canister, kind of like slow simmer. This is so that the granulars do not crush each other to fine powder.

Can't help with the powerhead question, sorry.

You should not mix carbon in with the phosban. Run one for a while, then switch to the other for a bit. Let it run continuously for a month or so, then clean out the unit and switch to the other. :)

BTW, ours has been running for a couple of weeks now. No change in the ha as yet. I want miracles!!! LOL

Lossman,

Ya mine has been in for two days and I keep looking in there for some sort of miracle as well. I am hoping that one day, I will look into my tank and all ha is gone and the tank is beutiful again.

Then I wake up.

lol

LOL, I went in yesterday and plucked out some more ha. I think if I can get as much out as I can, then the phosban will take care of the rest and will prevent new stuff from coming out. Unfortunately, a few spots are in areas that I cannot reach. I have 4 mexican turbos that have not gone near the stuff. Of course, with a 150g tank, there are a ton of other areas for them to be instead of those area. I even tried to pick up the turbos and put them down right next to the ha. Unfortunately, they just happened to be facing the wrong way and moved away from it!!! LOL

i am havin gall the same problems. I bouth 100 snail online and they all migrate to the glass. I keep taking them back to the ha and they do not even show interest.

I think the store they came from must have fed them caviar.

lol
