How does an RO/DI unit work?

I'm looking into switching from freshwater to saltwater/reef. I will have some spare tanks sitting around and I plan on using some of them for quarantine tanks for frags and livestock, sumps, and to "make" my RO/DI water. I had planned on using 75 gallon tanks for both of the tanks I'm planning on switching (125 and 100). Can I fill up a 75 gallon tank with tap and then run the water through a good RO/DI system for a couple of days to get the water ready for the necessary waterchanges. Also, will the salt water mess up my septic tank?

Okay. I read somewhere that the salt water would mess my septic tank up. It will probably mess up the grass in my yard, and the other plants. So what to do with the salt water from a water change?

RO/DIs work with pressure, usually from your home water supply. You can use a pump, but that's way more trouble than it's worth, IMO. Never use tap to start. That's just asking for problems down the road. Get the RO/DI and hook it to your house supply. Then fill your tanks. Yes, it will take longer but you won't reget it later.

Most people use Rubbermaid Brute trash cans to store their water, new ones of course. They are food grade plastic and work well.

I pour my old water on grass I want to kill. It doesn't work. The grass still grows.

I wouldn't pour saltwater in my septic system either but others have been doing it for years with no ill effects.

I pour my waste salt water on weeds I want to kill. If you pour in high concentrations it will kill it. If you pour lightly and all over the place it won't.

I don't run it down the septic...
