How does VDM output (technical question)

I know it has 4 independent 0-10V variable speed ports, but what form of communication does the serial output have? From what I understand it's for the AI led system, but does anyone know what form of communication Apex uses to output from the DB9 serial connector? Any particular signal style? Is it possible for an individual to program something that the Apex will output via the DB9 connector or is it only through firmware to use that connector?

You cannot change the programming (commands) that the VDM sends to the AI LED unit but the above link gives you an idea what the VDM is doing. It uses the RAW values (0-255) for 2 channels. I've heard that the document is not current and there are some commands that are no longer supported but this is what AI has posted so it's the best reference available at the moment.

Do you have specific questions? What are you trying to do?

thank you for you response! So i can't change what it sends to the AI, but could I program the Apex to output other things via the serial connector? I imagine this is what it does for the Apex-AI plug style Do you know if the apex can output a I2C protocol for 2-wire control? Thanks
