How far away is too far from the Light?

How far, in inches, is it too far to put my maxima from the metal halide? I just got a new maxima and i wanted to know what the ideal length should be between the clam and the light. thanx!

depends on what kind of lights you have.

It also depends how far the light is off the water. Intensity drops off faster if it is travelling through water than air.
