How fast does it spread?

Alright I purchased a yellow tang 2 days ago from a LFS. I know I know.. QT QT QT. Well, I didnt, but I will from now on. Anyway, I acclimated and tossed him in. Sailfin gave him a hard time the first day, but yesterday they were swimming around together. He was eating fine and looked healthy.

I came home today around 5pm and after looking a little closer, the yellow tang is covered in white salt like spots. My first thought is ICH. Only thing is.. he is covered in spots... all fins, face, body... lots. Does ich spread that fast. I realize it lives dormant and can show when stressed, but does it spread that quick or am I looking at some other disease or fungus?

Can gets some pics if I need, but i think you get the idea. Thanks.

you probably had ich in your DT to begin with, and you happened to put the yellow tang in right before the theronts hatch. Hence the large number of ich all of a sudden.

That is one possibility. Or it came in loaded, which is more likely.

Or it is velvet, which IME spreads and kills much faster. Either way I'd start treating right away. You can do a FW dip and if some spots fall off it is velvet, if not then it is ich. Copper, like Cupramine, in a QT is very affective for both. Hypo in a QT only works for ich.

Same thing with my tang , I didn't QT, I noticed a white spot immediately after putting him in my DT.. The next day, his body was full of salty white spots.

In my case, my DT was clean and I believe the tang was loaded with ich (that wasn't visible the day before). By the second day, I had removed the tang but my other fish started getting white spots too. They never had it before so more proof it was the tang.

Exactly. Good advice. Fresh water dips have no affect on ich but will help with velvet immediately.

Alright well I tried to catch him last night to put him in QT but I failed time and time again. It was late so I had to give up and hope for the best till today. I came home and he is swimming around the tank with no signs of yesterdays epidemic. He looks just a little dull colored but no saltlike spots... what gives?

2nd day after the "ich" breakout and he looks completely normal. Swimming, grazing, eating.... im not sure if anything should be done now.

Ich is still in your display even though the spots are gone. It is likely a matter of time before it appears again.

it is a bit unusual for all the ich spots to be gone one day after the first sign of ich, even though it is possible. are you sure those are ich and not sand?

Def not sand. It was unusual to see it sprout that fast and even weirder to see it disappear. The day after it started he was a little blotchy and today is perfectly healthy looking. Makes me doubt ich even more, but after searching the internet and forums and hadnt seen anything else like it.
