how long before hosting occurs?

Question: How long will it take for my LTA and mated pair of tomato clowns to host together? Before you answer you must know that the mated pair was in a tank together for 9 years and have been spawning regularly without an anemone. One week ago I took down and moved the tank (and all inhabitants) that the clowns were in from home to my classroom at school. I just transfered a LTA from a friend's tank that was hosting a maroon clown for about 2 years and placed it in the newly moved tank at school with the tomato clowns. The maroon clown was left behind. The anemone is attached and doing well. The clowns are hanging together but could seem to care less that I put an anemone in the tank for them. I would really love for this symbiosis to occur so my students can see it! It has been 3 days and I want to know how long it takes for the clowns to move to the anemone and call it their own. HELP!

Oh. . . the tank size is 180gal. Don't know if that matters or not?

It can take days, weeks, months, someone on here posted that it took their clown almost a year--so it will likely happen, but it could be a while.

I put a BTA in with my maroon clown today. 15 minutes later he was in it and has been having a great time since. So, there's no way of knowing how long it will take.

I had a similar issue. I had read that competition from rival clowns will speed up hosting. I printed a picture of another clown and put it against the glass. 3 seconds later they were inseparable.

What else do you have in the tank? I've seen many a clownfish decide they want to live in a coral, or hang out in the corner rather than live in the anemone.

I have a pair of false percs and a LTA 1 year and still not hosting. But that same pair hosted a Mag in 15 min.

A few corals but mostly zoos and shrooms. . . nothing with that swaying, rhythmic motion that would mimic an anemone. They seem content to live in an elaborate archway of live rock. Today, the female actually went over to the anemone and was checking it out cautiously. She even shunned away a damsel that was close by. Looks like she wants in but won't take the jump. keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah I put a BTA in too and my clown hosted it overnight. I was shocked with how fast it happened.

Good luck, I have a pair of false percs and i have had the Anemone for 3 months and they wont even go near it. Even if I push them towards it, they could care less about it. And the Anemome is huge, I know they would love it if they would just get in it. I guess we just have to be patient. If I wasnt attached to them I would take them out and go buy some straight out of an Anemone.
