How long before the yellow tang quits?

Tangs can sure be bears, I had a bristol mouth that went balistic on my orange shoulder to the point I had to trap him and send him back : ) On another note I use garlic extreme with every feeding which in my opinion really helps with appetite stimulation may be wrong but it has worked for me and I always have a clip of seaweed selects hanging in the tank. Yellows can be bears as can the ones you'd least exspect. If you need to catch him try a trap or even a fish hook with the barbs removed, good luck.

A magnificent foxface will get too big for a 125. Trust me on this. I have only had mine for about four months and he's grown so fast that I can almost hear his skin stretching. If I'm not mistaken I think I have read that they reach up to 13 inches.
As I said before, give the tangs some time to settle down. Be patient; it isn't always a matter of days, but more like a matter of weeks or months before fish accept another that it sees as a rival. If he isn't beating the other fish to death, chances are it will work out eventually.
Your powder brown may not make it. With the stress of moving, being hassled by the yellow, and the fact that your tank is newly set up, it may not be able to withstand all of that combined. They aren't the hardiest fish out there. If you can keep him eating (you said that you saw him eating nori, correct?) you've won most of the battle right there.

nitro- here is the brass tacks- tangs are territorial aggressive fish. Your powder brown will surely whip any added after him. Sometimes, you just gotta let it ride, and let them work it out. If not, youll just have to have one tang.
I dont mean to sound abrupt, but if you start the game of saying "this fish is too aggressive", you will constantly be rotating fish through the display. Tangs are aggressive, so plan on them being aggressive.

Ok, I am going to leave the yellow tang separated in the tank for a week. If he is still the same, then I will have to give him away or trade him in. When he spots the powder brown through the eggcrate he flares and back and forth on the eggcrate with his tail toward him.
What other larger fish can go in? I am going to get a magnificent foxface, what other larger type can go in? It is a mixed reef.

I have a 210 with a sailfin who is 3" long and one inch wide. A pig. A healthy yellow too. Recently had a PBlue T, same size, got through the mail in the winter, arrived cold, aggressive slow drip, eating after a few days, no QT; ate for a few weeks, then progressively got worse and worse ich, pulled him out to a QT; died shortly thereafter.
Grabbed a Pbrown T from a LFS, 4", QT for 10 days, no hypo; looked just fine, eating real well. Added him to the 210 since I am going on vacation and the hypo won't work well with a neo watching the system.
The YT and SFT are being bastards. Worse than with the blue T. I can't pull apart the reef; will have to wait and see and will add my luck to this thread.

Wow, good luck! I separated the yellow tang with eggcrate, and the clowns are in there with the yellow tang too since that is where they like to be. I noticed a few tail slaps on the larger clown, but not many. I tried moving them over, but they like that side. I may just trade in the yellow tang.
So, should I stick with just 1 tang, the powder brown, and trade in the yellow tang? I was looking for a magnificent foxface, but if I only have 1 tang I would want 1 other larger fish. Any other types of larger reef safe fish you can think of with lots of color?

I love tangs but ever since the YT went in I can't add anymore tangs in so I started adding angels. The only reason the hippo is still alive is probably he was already established and he backs off. If you can get the YT out do it otherwise every fish you add in the future will get a beating.

Ya, I have the yellow tang in the same tank as the rest, just separated by eggcrate. I can catch him real easy now.
So, would you go with another tang and a smaller one at that, or just go with the foxface and maybe 1 larger fish (maybe)?
I don't really want the fiji foxface, waiting for a magnificent one to show up.

If you want another tang you better do it fast otherwise the one you've now gets established it'll be like your current YT.

I put the yellow and powder brown in at the same time, the yellow is just aggresive lol. The powder brown is bigger and never defended, or if he did, not much. What about a naso, chevron, small sailfin (the coral sea one, not desjardinii, they are labeled peaceful on Live Aquaria?).
Small being 2" one maybe? Would the powder brown fight with it then or would the powder brown be picked on again?
It should be QT though, and that would be 3 weeks so the powder brown would probably be established by then I'm sure.

If there is another larger fish that is colorful and active like tangs, what would they be for reef safe? Will it be OK to QT a new tang for 3 weeks and then introduce it or will it get beaten? I really wanted a sohal until I read on them. A 2" one wouldn't work huh? Mixed responses on the sohal, so not sure. It may take 2 years to get to around the 6" mark wouldn't it? That's one that would be good to put in last after everything was established.

Get rid of the yellow tang.

I tried re-arranging the rockwork. Tried putting a mirror up (worked for a while). But in the end the yellow had to go.
The whole tank partied after he left.
I have a naso in with the powder brown now and they get along well.

Ok, what size tank is yours? I thought of a naso, but also really like the way sohals look, but that might get you into deeper troubles than a yellow tang. I didn't think yellow tangs were this aggresive, just looking at the 'semi-aggresive' label they have until reading all these posts.
What kind of naso, the blonde naso with streamers or no streamers? The non blonde one, just naso?
Was the powder brown established when you added the naso? Was the powder brown aggresive toward it when you put the naso in with him at first?

The powder and naso went in within days of each other.
The tank is a 6ft 120g.
The naso is probably the most social fish in the tank and appears to get along well with everyone else.
The powder brown is now starting to get assertive with the naso but nothing like the yellows attacks. The mostly hang out together all day but the brown will try to dominate the naso now and again. So far nothing serious. Time will tell.
I also have a foxface in the tank. He is the oldest established fish. Most of the time he is content to hide out and tolerates his new curious tankmates well. He flared up at them early on but now shows no signs of stress when they are nearby.
I'm probably pushing the lower limit for a fox and naso with the 120 and will watch for problems as they grow. The rockwork allows for plenty of hiding places and is also open front and back for the full 6ft run. Nothing like a wild reef but at least they have several body lengths of running room. The naso is the only one who uses the tank top to bottom.

Ok, I put the powder brown in on Tuesday, would a week be too long to put another tang in? Should the naso be smaller?
A foxface should be able to go in last correct? Poisonous dorsals so they wouldn't mess with it? A LFS near me said their purple tang took out their foxface but purples must be just as mean as yellows.

keep in mind that a naso tang is rated for at least 180g tank. you might be ok with a small one for now but it will outgrow your 125g. they can grow around 18". your PBT i think can grow to be around 12"(?). if you want another tang why not try a kole tang. they are less aggressive. i dont know about the chevron tang, i wanted to put one in my 135g but i dont know how aggressive they are or how hardy they are. all i know is that they can get a little expensive. i can get one wholesale for $66 so im sure my LFS is selling them for around $90+.
