How long did it take your Rod's onyx to Onyx?

I've got a pair of non-Rod's onyx percs that I got as babies. They are about 8 months old; one is showing no black at all and the other is just a little grey between first and second stripes (which are the only stripes at this point). The breeder said that it's not possible to guarantee that the babies of onyx clowns will become onyx themselves. He said that some do, and some don't. You can't tell which way it will go when they are babies.

GSMguy, your clowns are awesome-looking. I wish mine would grow up to look like that.

Rod's clowns have an outstanding track record of onyx coloration, but of course there is always the risk.

For what it's worth, even without the onyx coloration you've got two specimens of some of the finest Percula clowns in the trade right now...I've seen very few fish that can rival the amazing body shape and quality of Rod's fish.

there's a possibility you're part of the 5% or whatever the # is...but it could also be the food you're feeding or the nem or whatever it is that they're hosting...if they're hosting something...

I think the % of percs-from-onyx-parents that never turn onyx themselves is a lot higher than 5%...more like 30-40%

not with Rods, but i agree about other "onyx".

I am curious how many perc-owners have mixed clown types in their tanks?

I have a pair of juvie maybe-onyx's, and a single Clarkii that is 1.5 yrs old. I plan to consolidate 2 tanks which means putting a second 1.5 yr old Clarkii in with these others. This second Clarkii is pretty mean and bites me frequently. Do you think that if the Clarkiis paired up they would harrass the percs?

sorry for the highjack

rod claims that he has a higher percentage rate of his fishes turning into onyx...he claims that 95% of his fishes turns into onyx...i guess you fall in that 5%...rod also claims that his fish colors up faster than all other fishes...i don't have a pair myself but from what i've read and heard from people that has a pair or a fish from rod, the've all backed up rod's claim...rod does have nice fishes...i wouldn't mind getting a pair myself but i'm expecting my 2nd pair of picassos next week so too many clowns for me already...

I agree. They are nice clowns. Would I have paid $50 each plus $50 shipping for them? Probably not.

I received some of Rod's at the end of Oct '07. Very small. They settled in and grew their 3rd stripe in a couple of months. The more mature clown I paired with a very mature female I have had for years. She was a breeder until her mate died. The new onyx quickly darkened up and they began spawning in May '08. Yes, the eggs were fertile. I have since removed the male and put the other Rod's onyx with the older female, since it remained in juvenile coloration and size. Trying to help it bulk up a little. Rod really does have some excellent percs, but there is bound to be some variablity.
